Alicia is a flute specialist and able to teach both flute and piccolo. An enthusiastic teacher keen to share her passion and knowledge, she teaches from complete beginners up to grade 8+ standard and will happily take on anyone of any age!
Whether you want to learn to play the flute just for fun or with the aim of working towards graded examinations, Alicia can cater for your needs. Having experience in preparing both herself and others for ABSRM examinations, Alicia predominately teaches to the ABRSM syllabus however should you prefer to take examinations with other exam boards this is not a problem. Lessons will have a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to allow pupils to reach their full potential whilst getting enjoyment out of their music-making.
Alicia currently lives in the Cathays area of Cardiff and can travel within a certain radius of the RWCMD to give lessons. Lessons can be as regular or as one-off as suits your needs.
Alicia offers tuition in preparation for the ABRSM grade 5 music theory exam (which is required to progress to your grade 6 practical), if you need help right from the start or just a little extra guidance in the run up to your exam.
She also offers extra help with GCSE/A-Level music for those needing a bit of extra guidance with the curriculum or those who really want to achieve the top grades.
Among other subjects, Alicia studied harmony, counterpoint and analysis during her undergraduate studies at the University of Leeds and currently studies Advanced Performance Analysis at the RWCMD as part of her Masters. She also has A Level Music (A) and GCSE Music (A*) qualifications.
Alicia's previous students have mainly been beginners working at grade 0-3 level but she is more than happy to teach any age or ability from grade 0-8. Alicia have also advised and helped a couple of undergraduate flautists through their first/second year assessments.
Alicia has previous experience in preparing students for ABRSM examinations and extensive knowledge of the standards required through her own experiences. She is currently also a flute and piccolo mentor for Penguin Instrumentors in Cardiff.

LRSM and DipABRSM diploma holder and First Class BMus(Hons) graduate from the competitive Music Performance course at the University of Leeds.
LRSM diploma holder and First Class Honours music graduate, Alicia is currently studying for a MMus Masters in Music Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Alicia studies flute with Sarah Newbold and flute and piccolo with Elizabeth May. She also has a keen interest in teaching and is a flute mentor with Penguin Instrumentors in Cardiff.
In July 2016, Alicia graduated from the competitive BMus Music Performance course at the University of Leeds with a First Class Honours degree. During her studies she received the Frank Toothill Memorial Prize, a Certificate of Commendation for excellent second year results and left with the Certificate of Commendation for her outstanding contribution to performance. For the 2014-2015 academic year, Alicia spent an Erasmus year abroad studying at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik 'Franz Lizst', Weimar in Germany. There she was taught by Nikolai Jaeger (flute) and Benjamin Plag (piccolo).
As a young professional flautist, Alicia mainly focuses on classical repertoire but is willing to explore a variety of different styles. Alicia is a confident soloist and keen ensemble player, open to any new and exciting opportunities that come her way in the Cardiff area.
