A friendly and dedicated teacher who aims to inspire a desire to work hard and enjoy learning languages. I focus on grammar, with a strong emphasis on verb conjugations. With a firm understanding of verbs, anything in language is possible!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Spanish and French language to GCSE level, although I also try to teach A-level grammar where possible and appropriate; certain grammatical structures like the subjunctive are not expected at GCSE level but are easily learned and are extremely impressive to examiners.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied French, Spanish and Latin to A-level, earning A grades in all three subjects, having earned an academic Scholarship to senior school. I gained a Scholarship, based on my A-level results, to the University of Manchester. I studied Linguistics, which helped me further my understanding of grammatical concepts and structures.
After earning my undergraduate degree in Manchester, I completed a postgraduate degree in Law, earning a Distinction on the Legal Practice Course, and qualified as a solicitor in 2014.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £30/hour and prefer 2 hour sessions in order to fully cover all the material. There is a charge of £5 per session for travel expenses - negotiable for shorter journeys.
- Where do you teach?
I am able to travel to tutees' houses within a reasonable distance of my home in Battersea (SW11) - areas such as Clapham, Putney, Tooting, Wimbledon, Vauxhall, Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea are all easily accessible, as is the majority of Central, South and West London. I will assess whether journeys further afield are practicable on a student-by-student basis.
Normally I will drive to sessions but I am happy to use public transport to get to and from sessions in and around London.
- When are you available?
My timetable is variable and flexible. Please get in touch for details. I am able to arrange my schedule around tutees' needs, although my weekends are quite full.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I usually teach children of 14-16 years of age who are preparing to take their GCSE exams.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare my students to take their GCSE exams, covering the reading, writing, listening and oral modules of the syllabus. I will also teach a number of more complex grammatical structures that will prepare students for potentially taking the subjects to A-level (and which will impress examiners greatly).
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I know what it's like to be an overworked student taking a lot of exams they don't necessarily find all that interesting. I aim to make language learning as inoffensive as possible, even enjoyable if you'll let me. It's easier to learn from someone you get along with, so I prefer a friendly and informal approach.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have learned French and Latin from an early age and lived in Spain (Madrid, Cádiz and Granada) in 2012, and am passionate about the importance of grammar in language learning. Having been drilled in A-level Latin verbs at the tender age of 13, I have since been able to transfer this knowledge to learning verbs in all tenses in both French and Spanish, and fully appreciate how important verbs are in speaking foreign languages, and in particular how many marks can be gained or lost in exams through poor knowledge of tenses and moods. I have fairly recently been through the education system and have always been very successful in language exams, and I know what examiners look out for in written and oral exercises.
In recent years I have tutored French and Spanish to GCSE level with a great degree of success, and all of my tutees have achieved at least A-grades at GCSE - considerably higher than predicted in all cases.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up-to-date certificate, obtained 13 August 2014 for the purposes of admission to the Roll of Solicitors, which is available on request.
