Sam - TW2 - Enthusiastic, Friendly English Tutor, 10 Years' Experience, 2 English MAs

Methodology

I am an enthusiastic, friendly and supportive tutor who believes that everyone has the potential to improve their language ability. I am passionate about the English language and its literature, which I have studied all my life. I have worked as a tutor for 10 years and have achieved excellent results, helping students to boost their confidence and to excel in lessons and exams.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach English language and literature, from KS2 through to degree level. I often help students to prepare for entrance exams, from the 11+ and 13+ exams through to university entrance. I also teach EFL, including exam preparation. I have also run my own online proofreading and copy-editing business for 10 years: my clients are wide-ranging and include international businesses, novelists and academics.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have three degrees in English subjects: a BA (hons; 2:1) from the University of Warwick in English Literature, an MA from the University of Sheffield in American Literature and an MA from Bath Spa University in Creative Writing.

- How much do you charge?

My fees are £32 an hour, which reflects the amount of preparation required - I also offer a 10% block-booking discount. I do not give free first lessons but am happy for a parent and their child to come to my house for an chat prior to a first lesson (or to do so on the phone) if required.

- Where do you teach?

I generally teach at home in Twickenham, my house is easily accessible on public transport and there is also parking available.

- When are you available?

I teach during school hours, weekends and evenings. I will travel to students living less than a mile away. I also teach in the school holidays. It is best to contact me and let me know your availability.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

All ages and levels, from children as young as eight who are really struggling with English to those at university who want some help with essay writing.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

All qualifications - often 11+ and GCSE, also 13+ and A-level, up to university-level qualifications. I also teach exams such as IELTS and the Cambridge exam to mature EFL students.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I work online as a proofreader and copy-editor. If you would like this service, please contact me with the word count of your text and your deadline.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Everyone is a unique learner and as such, I recognise the importance of working with people at their own pace and conduct each lesson on a bespoke basis to get the best out of everyone. Even shy children almost always warm to me very quickly, and it is a great pleasure to watch them bloom and to do better and better in every lesson. As a mother of two, I understand how to talk to children and how to get the best out of them. I have a great love of the English language, and of its literature, and aim to pass that on to my tutees. I seek to raise my students' confidence levels and to make them believe that they can do well. I have been described by as a kind and thoughtful teacher and as reliable, punctual and pleasant.

I have 10 years' experience of tutoring English at all levels, from KS1 to degree. I very much enjoy teaching both children and adults and have been described as a friendly, patient and creative teacher. I also work as a professional copy-editor and proofreader.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

English literature at all levels; English language.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have three degrees in English - two at Master's level (in Creative Writing and also in American Literature) and one BA, from the University of Warwick, in English Literature (2:1 hons).

- How much do you charge?

I charge £32 an hour. I offer a 10% block-booking discount for lessons booked in advance. I do not do group lessons.
- Where do you teach?

I normally work only from home but can travel a short distance if required.

- When are you available?

Please contact me in regard to my availability.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

All ages and levels.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

7+, 11+ and 13+ exams; GCSEs; A levels; degree exams.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I offer an online proofreading and copy-editing service - search for Sam Szanto Proofreading and Copy-editing. I do not tutor English online.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have worked as a private tutor for 10 years, with people of all ages and nationalities: from children as young as eight to mature students.

I have experience in helping children to prepare for admissions exams and interviews, including the 7+, 11+ and 13+ exams. I have successfully tutored students for entry into some of the leading schools in the country, including The Tiffin Girls' School and Lady Eleanor Holles.

I work with numerous GCSE and A level candidates. I provide tutees with help to: understand the rules of grammar; improve their linguistic style; write essays or creative pieces; analyse literary texts; or prepare for an exam, piece of coursework or interview. The academic level of the children I teach varies immensely, but I help all of them in different ways; as well as raising their grades and helping them to pass an exam, many parents have commented that I have notably improved their child's confidence in the classroom.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have had CRB checks, including when I worked at City of London School for Girls.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My current students range from children taking 11+ examinations to get into grammar schools in September, to a child who is about to go into Year 10 and wants to prepare for her GCSEs, to mature students seeking to improve their English (one of whom needs to pass the IELTS exam).

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have worked as a personal tutor for approximately 10 years, with children and adults of all ages and levels of literacy. I am happy to teach anyone who wishes to learn. Successes include helping children to pass the English component of entrance exams to esteemed local schools such as Tiffin Girls Grammar, Lady Eleanor Holles, Kings College School and Hampton School, as well as with interview preparation for schools and universities including Oxford. I have also helped older children to significantly raise their grades at GCSE, most notably from an E to an A*, and A level. However, my real achievements have been in helping to raise children's confidence and to make them realise that there is more to English than passing a test, and that anyone can do better in the subject and more importantly, enjoy it!

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

This is not relevant as I am not employed directly by a school or similar organisation but I have been CRB-cleared to work with children in the past when I did work directly for a school. I have no criminal convictions. It is almost always better for the student for tutoring to be carried out without the parents being present, but if the parents wish, and a student is under 18, I am happy for them to be present in the lesson.
