Samuel - South Norwood - Music Theory

Methodology

I am a highly experienced music teacher, pianist and composer working in London. I enjoy teaching music to people of all ages and finding new approaches for each student. I have a 100% pass rate for all students entered into ABRSM exams.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach piano, composition, music theory, songwriting and can provide additional support for GCSE and A Level music.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have an MMus Degree, with distinction and Dip. RAM from the Royal Academy of Music and a BMus (Hons) 1st Class degree from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
I am currently composer-in-residence at Scottish Opera.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £40 for 1 hour lessons, £30 for 45 minutes and £20 for 30 minute lessons.

- Where do you teach?

Due to increased demand, I teach all students at my home. In exceptional circumstances, travel to other homes may be arranged.

- When are you available?

During term time, I teach in the day and during the afternoon/evening in regular weekly slots Monday - Saturday.
I often give lessons during school holidays according to availability.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages from around the age of 5 all the way through to adult students. I teach piano and music theory from beginner to Grade 1 through to Grade 8. I teach all levels of music in the national curriculum, including GCSE students and A level students.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I work with ABRSM piano and theory grades and all GSCE and A Level syllabuses.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I am able to answer specific questions or provide guidance in all subjects via email.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I believe the best way for students to develop is by enjoying themselves and by exploring their repertoire through a deep understanding of musical context. I introduce more advanced students to repertoire through either ABRSM graded syllabus or free study. I believe in encouraging students by highlighting the positive aspects of their work, as well as making detailed suggestions which will help them improve. A great deal of my teaching with children/beginners is through educational music games and playing tunes they will recognise.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught music students in piano, theory and composition for over 10 years. During this time, I have shared my passion for music and education in private tuition, group keyboard classes and a number of undergraduate/GCSE/A Level Mentoring schemes. My students range from ages 5 through to 80 years old. Current and past students have gone on to achieve music scholarships and choral scholarships at independent schools.

I have strong links to the Royal Academy of Music and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire as an alumnus. I have taught composition and musicianship as a deputy tutor at Junior Trinity. I have worked on inspirational education projects with London Music Masters, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Swan bringing music to local schools in the community.

My work as a dedicated music teacher is backed up by my work as a professional musician. As a composer my music has been played regularly throughout Britain and in Europe. I am currently composer-in-residence at Scottish Opera. I have won many awards including the Mendelssohn Scholarship, a Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize 2014, a shortlisting in the BASCA British Composer Awards 2014 and 2015, the Charles Lucas Prize in 2011, the Alan Bush Prize in 2010, a British Council Scholarship, the Lena Pritchard Green Award, the Charles Black Fellowship and other awards from The Mendelssohn Foundation, The Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the AHRC and The Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust. My music has been performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra, Scottish Opera, the choirs of Her Majesty's Chapel Royal, Tête à Tête Opera Festival and St Paul's Cathedral Choir.
