- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I specialise in literacy interventions using professional educational programmes, in particular phonics, reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, comprehension, vocabulary, punctuation and grammar. Read Write Inc. Phonics, Get Writing, Get Spelling, Comprehension and Fresh Start. Nessy dyslexia programme and Nessy Fingers typing. Teodorescu and Speed Up handwriting. COPS 4-7 & LASS 8-11 dyslexia screening. I tutor up to approximately old level 6 with 2014 curriculum spec. materials, 2018-ready, and keep up-to speed with KS3 developments.
In numeracy I ensure a child has a full understanding of number, shape, space and measures, handling data and multiplication tables, again using recognised intervention programmes. Numicon and Dyscalculia Assessment; trained with Patricia Babtie. I can offer access to ixl.com maths and English at a much reduced rate. I tutor up to approximately old level 6 with 2014 curriculum spec. materials, 2018-ready, and again keep up-to speed with KS3 developments.
I prepare children for the 7+ and 11+ / common entrance exams and have had tutees accepted, some with scholarships and Headteacher's awards, into Bristol Grammar , QEH, Clifton College, Clifton High, Red Maids, Colston's (ex-Colleageate) School and Colston's Girls' School with top scores in the Language Assessment exam. I have a tutee in the final stages of possible acceptance into Harrow and Eton.
I also offer 'Get Ready for School' sessions for pre-school children to prepare for any future Reception Baseline Assessment.
I also offer English as an Additional Language for new arrivals to Britain.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am educated to degree level with a BA Hons 2.1 (with commendation for dissertation)
I have held Higher Level Teaching Assistant status since 2010.
- How much do you charge?
I offer a free half-hour consultation. Lessons are then £35 per hour in your home, school or online via Skype, or £32 per hour at my home.
I also offer 'Get Ready for School' sessions for pre-school children for £30 per 45 minutes in your home.
I only accept payment in the form of a bank transfer, payable a month or term in advance. I do not accept cash.
I do not offer a discount for siblings or for more than one session per week.
- Where do you teach?
I offer intensive one-to-one tuition for your child in your own home in North Bristol, in BS6-9 only. I hold public liability insurance for peace of mind against any accidental damage in your home.
I also tutor students in my own home in Redland, BS6, Bristol, for a reduced fee. This is especially suitable for students who have more than one lesson per week, or who live further out. I live a five-minute walk from the busy shopping areas of Whiteladies Road and Cotham Hill, and from Cotham Gardens. I can provide a Cotham Residents' parking permit for lessons before 17.00. I live halfway between Clifton Down and Redland railway stations.
I can also visit students in schools in Bristol who are in receipt of the Pupil Premium, or privately with the full consent of the school.

I am usually available from 3.30 until 8.00 Monday to Friday.
I am also available to tutor in your home BS6-9 ONLY from 1.00 until 3.30 Wednesday, Thursday or Friday during Bristol term time for pre-school or home-schooled children. A family member must remain on the premises at all times.
Visiting students in school is by special arrangement.
Sessions during school holidays can be arranged at mutually convenient times.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I mainly teach children aged from 4 to 12, covering the whole of KS1 and KS2, including the transitions from pre-school to primary school and on to secondary school.
I can also support KS3 students with English or Maths who are working below expectations, or who need support with organisational and study skills, handwriting, presentation or exam technique.
I will consider supporting KS4 students who are working significantly below expectations and are preparing for GCSEs at foundation level.
I offer shorter sessions for pre-school children covering basic 'Get Ready for School' skills.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare children for any future Reception Baseline Assessments, Y1 Phonics Test, 7+ exam, KS1 SATs, the new Y4 Times Tables test to be introduced in 2019, KS2 SATs, 11+ exam and Common Entrance exam. I also support students who are taking GCSEs at foundation level.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I tutor online via Skype and Teamviewer.

My philosophy is that education is a partnership. We need to work as a team. I can only make a difference if you are motivated to learn and work hard, and your parents or carers are fully supportive.

I have been self-employed as a private tutor for four-and-a-half years, trading as Bristol Primary Tutoring.
I have 8 years' experience of working in primary schools with the last 2 years as Literacy interventions Co-ordinator. I am fully experienced and qualified in teaching one-to-one, small groups and whole classes in all areas of the curriculum.
I have a further 2 years previous experience in a pre-school setting.
I am experienced in working one-to-one with children with special and additional needs, in particular dyslexia and dyscalculia, Asperger's and ADHD. However, I require that any SEND, diagnosed or suspected, is disclosed in advance.

- Tell me about some of your current students.
Some of my past students included a Year 1 with dyslexia learning to read with phonics, a Year 2 with dyspraxia who improved considerably in his reading and maths, a G & T Year 2 taking the 7+ exam, a Year 3 being assessed for both ADHD and dyslexia for reading and maths, a Year 4 with moderate dyslexia who was reluctant to write, a Year 5 with dyslexia and ADHD, many Year 6s for KS2 SATs and practising verbal and non-verbal tests for 11+ exams and gaining scholarships, and entry to Eton, Harrow and Marlborough, a Year 7 with dyslexia and emotional difficulties, a Year 8 with dyscalculia, a Year 9 who needed to improve his handwriting and presentation skills for his GCSEs, a Year 10 boy with dyscalculia about to start working for his GCSE maths, and, via Skype, a Year 7 child in Dubai with a specific language impairment. As you can see, a wide range!
Current students include several Year 6s who prepared for 11+ with a 100% success rate, including one with Asperger's who was offered 3 maths scholarships and one who received the Headteacher's award for English. Some are continuing, with other Year 6s, for SATs preparation, several having dyslexia, one who also has dyspraxia and another who also has Asperger's. I have a Year 1 with dyscalculia who is preparing for the phonics test and has just been accepted into a private school, two Year 2s with maths difficulties preparing for KS1 SATs, a gifted and talented year 4 who will staying with me up to 11+, three year 5s, one who has both dyslexia and dyscalculia and is also very bright and two who are preparing for the 11+, two Year 7s with dyslexia, one of whom also has ADHD, a Year 8 with dyslexia, a Year 9, also with dyslexia and two Y10s preparing for GCSEs.

We have been thoroughly impressed with Sandra as a tutor and the way she has really engaged our son in his learning. D was only recently diagnosed as dyslexic and at first we didn't know which way to turn. Fortunately we found Sandra and she brought order to chaos. She walked us through her teaching approach and methods which are very structured, comprehensive and interactive. D enjoys learning via a variety of mediums and comes out of each lesson with a sense of achievement, not failure. He even completes the homework he's set! He's engaged and positive. It is obvious that Sandra excels as a teacher.
