I am a friendly and experienced teacher of all ages and abilities. I love playing and teaching my students how to enjoy their musical skills!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I specialise in teaching upper strings (viola and violin), however as I started my musical life on the piano, I feel just as comfortable teaching piano too. Alongside this, I teach theory and aural skills.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied at the Royal Northern College of Music specialising on the Viola.
I performed with the NYO and won music scholarships and awards.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £30 per hour for any lessons taken at my house or for online lessons. 45 minutes is £23 a lesson, and 30 minutes is £16 a lesson.
As I have an excellent Yamaha piano and plenty of resources at my house, I do not travel to teach. However should the need arise as a one-off, please discuss with me and I will see if this is an available option - subject to travel costs.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from my home in Lichfield, Staffordshire, where I have an excellent, regularly maintained, Yamaha piano for students to enjoy. It also provides an excellent opportunity for string pupils to be accompanied!
Lichfield is within easy reach of Tamworth, Rugeley, Burton on Trent, Sutton Coldfield, Cannock and Burntwood.
- When are you available?
I teach Monday - Thursday at various times between 9am and 6pm, although I am currently fully booked on a Wednesday from mid-morning and all day Thursdays, although these will change as students' timetables shift.
As I regularly perform at weekends, I am unable to offer any other days on a weekly basis.
I teach year-round, throughout the school holidays, with the exception of Christmas week. Occasionally I will take a break, although I notify students of this in advance!
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages...from 3 - 103 years old!
I use the WunderKeys curriculum for 3 - 5 year olds. This is a specially designed curriculum for this age and includes one-to-one lessons whilst introducing fun and lovable characters to help little ones learn. It provides a strong foundation in music before starting children on full note-reading, and it builds on maths skills.
For older children and adults, I tailor the lessons to individual requirements. I have plenty of adults that enjoy taking their first music exams, whilst others prefer to enjoy the instrument for their own pleasure.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I use ABRSM exams up to Grade 8 on upper strings and up to Grade 6 on piano.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I do have Skype and FaceTime accounts to use for online lessons.
I require the student's camera to be in a secure position allowing full view of their stance / seating position, as well as good audio facilities. Online lessons are not ideal on a permanent basis as there will be some physical adjustments to be made, especially on the Violin and Viola.
I require a copy of the music that the student is playing.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
For adults: It really is never too late to enjoy learning music! I provide a safe, comfortable environment to learn and build confidence and I will listen carefully to your goals whist encouraging you.
For children: Learning music as a child is such a gift. You don't have to be the next Lang Lang or Vanessa May to enjoy learning the piano or violin. One-to-one lessons, practise time, experiencing frustrations and successes all contribute to self-confidence and your achievement. Come and give it a go!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught privately since 2007 - a real mixture of adults and children of all abilities. Each student requires a different approach to teaching and over the years I have developed plenty of experience to bring out the best in each.
Performing-wise, I run 2 different string ensembles and I perform in both. Outside of these ensembles I have performed with various orchestras throughout the UK, as a supporting act, at famous music halls (Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican...) as well as on national television and radio.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up-to-date and fully-enhanced CRB/DBS check.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the European String Teachers' Association and hold Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Most of my adult students are new to music, or haven't had lessons for many years. I have beginner violinists, violists and pianists - all with very similar reasons for learning...just to enjoy music and feel they are still learning new skills! They love being part of the mini concerts and group rehearsals I create, so they can meet like-minded people. I've never met a more enthusiastic and motivated group of adult beginners who enjoy being part of team practise competitions! Most of my adult students have been with me for 4+ years.
The children I teach are self-motivated and understand that they can ask me anything. A number have been with me for 5+ years and I have recently inherited a couple of pupils who are working towards higher grades to help them play in their local orchestras.
