I feel very lucky to be a teacher. It's a privilege to spend time with budding musicians, whatever their age or ability level. Learning to play a musical instrument can be a great addition to anyone's life often aiding one to de stress/relax/focus on something else. I am completely student led, so whilst I advise and encourage I am always happy to cater for the needs of the individual. Grades or no grades - learning for enjoyment is fine with me!

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

For the past three years I have performed world wide in various Show Bands on board P&O and Celebrity Cruise Liners. My job included backing cabaret artists, production shows and featured big band/jazz sets. I am now settled in London.
I perform with my own jazz ensemble 'The Fliss Gorst Quartet' at various functions and events and have played with many Westcountry based function and jazz bands over the years.
Whilst in Birmingham I was a member of the 'National Saxophone Choir' for three years and performed in function and pit bands around the city.
I have experience teaching saxophone, piano, clarinet and music theory as well as jazz improvisation. I have also led children's music workshops/group lessons.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have seven years experience teaching woodwind instruments at all levels to all ages. Saxophone is my specialist instrument - I have taught beginner to post Grade 8 diploma standard. I also work in primary schools teaching whole class clarinet, as well as group teaching in secondary schools and private one to one lessons at home.
My teaching balances well with my career as a freelance saxophonist, running my own band and working in other ensembles across London.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I have a DBS number registered on the Update Service.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at Birmingham Conservatoire with Andrew Tweed.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I'm lucky enough to have some wonderful saxophone students! I've just said goodbye to one who recently passed her ARSM Alto Saxophone diploma with distinction! She is completing her A Levels and off to university leaving me some time to teach someone else. It's been amazing to see her playing transform over the years and her confidence increase! I currently have another brilliant student learning jazz with me. We've been going through the Trinity jazz grades and last term he passed his grade 7 jazz with merit. Excellent! Sometimes he even plays at some of the jazz jams in town. I'm also seeing some great progress from beginners at the moment. I've a lovely clarinet student who started in September and is getting ready to take her grade 1 soon. I've another who makes huge progress from week to week but just plays for fun so we don't bother with the grades.
