Sheila - Newark-on-Trent - Music Theory

Methodology

I love teaching students of all ages - whether they are are children taking their first steps in the world of music or adult late-starters! It's never too late to start learning an instrument and it can open up a whole new world of enjoyment.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Recorder, Violin/Viola and Music Theory.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Whilst completing my BMus Honours degree, I passed the LTCL Performers Diploma. Further diplomas held include LLCM and a Fellowship in Music Education from Trinity College (FMusEdTCL).

- How much do you charge?

Lessons are usually £12 for a half hour individual lesson or £17 for 45 minutes - although longer lessons can be arranged. Fees for workshops or group lessons are by arrangement.

- Where do you teach?

I usually teach at my home in Newark, Nottinghamshire but many of my students travel to me from Lincolnshire as I live so close to the border - or from further afield!

- When are you available?

Lesson times are by arrangement, but usually take place in afternoons and evenings on weekdays. I'm afraid I'm not available to teach at weekends because of regular conducting commitments.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all age groups from 5/6 years old onwards. I currently teach equal numbers of children and adults - a lovely mixture!
Recorder lessons are available from beginners to diploma level.
Violin lessons are currently available from beginners to around Grade 6/7.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Students often wish prepare for ABRSM grade exams, but this is optional... Many others prefer to study purely for their own enjoyment and satisfaction.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I am a very experienced teacher (over 30 years!) and I'm used to students of all ages and abilities. Over the years, I have come across most teaching and learning situations and hope to be able to deal with them with patience and good humour. Hopefully, lessons will always be positive and encouraging. Music is meant to be fun so a lesson should aim leave you in good spirits. Learn at your own pace - and enjoy the music!

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I taught privately and in schools in and around London between 1984 and 2009, teaching both one-to-one and in small groups. I also ran a number of regular workshop sessions for both adults and children.

Having relocated to the Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire borders in 2006, I continue to teach privately, giving one-to-one tuition in my own home. I also direct a regular adult recorder workshop in the Lincoln area.

I am also a member of the Society of Recorder Players and as such,am regularly invited to conduct workshops across the UK. I am the Musical Director of the newly-formed East Midlands Recorder Orchestra - in addition to being a regular conductor of the London Recorder Orchestra.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I obtained my Music degree at Lancaster University, where I studied recorder with Edward Cowie and violin with David Matthews. After a period of private study with Christopher Ball, I undertook further post-graduate studies at Trinity College of Music where I studied with Philip Thorby.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I belong to the European String Teachers Association (ESTA) and the European Recorder Teachers Association (ERTA).

- Tell me about some of your current students.

While over half my students are children, many of my students are adults - either those who have started later in life, or those who are returning to playing after a long gap. Currently I have students aged from 6 to over 86 - a lovely mixture!

Some students like the challenge of working towards the graded examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and have taken these with great success. Some also participate in local music festivals as additional performance opportunities. For others, the challenge is to reach a standard where they can play the music they love – or to join an ensemble where they can play with others.
