‘Breaks’ in the voice
Breathing
Diction
Stylistic/dramatic interpretation
Adapting and changing styles

About Jessica

I am a well rounded teacher who is flexible to each students needs and goals.

I trained myself at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in Vocal and Operatic Studies achieving a Bachelor of Music Honours Degree. In addition, I have since trained at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, achieving a Musical Theatre Masters Degree with Distinction. I am also a certifies vocal health first aider.

Further vocal and performance training includes the National Youth Theatre Epic Stages Course and Vox Integra Courses in the UK and Europe. Also I have Grade 8 ABRSM in both Singing and Piano, and can confidently accompany my students in lessons.

I have taught as a peripatetic singing teacher in numerous schools and other establishments, including Long Lake Camp for the Performing Arts in New York. I have also been the drama coach at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Summer School for Classical Singers (2019 & 2021). I have good aural skills and historical knowledge around musical theatre and classical music, and offer aural and music theory lessons as well as acting and piano. I also have musically directed choirs and musicals.

I have 10 years teaching experience, teaching students from beginner to intermediate in a variety of genres including Musical Theatre, Pop, Classical and Jazz. Singing exam syllabuses taught include ABRSM, LCM and TRINITY. I have entered over 300 students for exams and results have averaged at a distinction.

I focus firstly on confidence building/finding your voice and then performance and vocal technique follow, although the two do intertwine.

  • 01

When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I enjoyed singing from a young age and remember putting on concerts for my family every Sunday, singing anything from Steps to Robbie Williams. I started singing and piano lessons at the age of 8 and never stopped after that!

  • 02

Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

There are a few people/bands I could listen to on a loop! Bon Iver, Lianne La Havas, Mumford and Sons, Fat Freddys Drop, Gregory Porter and Ludovico Einaudi

  • 03

Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Once a student is confident in their ability, definitely exploring different vocal styles and music genres. Whether that be twanging out some musical theatre or rocking out to some indie. Each require a different set up.

Students may also like to challenge themselves and prepare for a music or acting exam!

  • 04

What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Probably the organ! So much going on.

  • 05

What are your keys to success?

Trusting the process. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable. Doing something that scares you. Perseverance!

  • 06

Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Gregory Porter in the hope that we can duet.
Billie Eilish because I'd be really interested in talking about her experience.
Maria Callas so I can ask her to serenade me.

  • 07

Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Strangely, I lost confidence in my singing a little when I went to music conservatoire and it took for me to get back to my childhood roots of singing music by Blue the band that reminded me why I loved singing in the first place. For the enjoyment and feel good factor! With singing you can be very self critical but sometimes it's worth stripping back to the simplicity of it to be able to excel again.

What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

As well as being advanced in my craft, I believe I am a very empathetic teacher and listen to each students reasons for having lessons and responding to every individuals way of learning. It is so important to be flexible in what you do and I think that's what I bring to a lesson. Versatility.
