I believe to be motivated in learning a craft you need to see results as quickly as possible. Therefore I like to get my students making real-life projects right away and learning the essential techniques as they go. It is important that they feel independent, yet supported in their sewing/crocheting.
I am a skilled seamstress and crocheter, as well as an experienced teacher. I have a background of running my own sewing business, before transitioning to teaching. I enjoy seeing those I have taught to sew finding confidence in their new skills and trying new things for themselves.
September 2014-September 2015
I have strong sewing and crochet skills, and I used my sewing skills in running my own business. I was self-employed and performed a great variety of alterations and repair work, besides the occasional garment commission. I have also taught various family members and friends to sew, all of whom were absolute beginners. Many of them I taught simultaneously, so I had to make sure that each individual had the help they needed for their own separate projects.
Ontutor (Online English teaching)
April 2016-July 2017
My students were all Korean, but they varied greatly in age (about 4 to 50) and ability. Although I was provided with some resources to draw on, the actual lesson content was my own responsibility. When the company referred a new student to me, I would conduct a trial lesson with them to assess what their individual aims were. I planned and customised lessons to the specific needs of the student, helping them improve their language skills in areas they needed in their own lives.
Italki (Online English teaching)
April 2017-February 2019
Italki is an online teaching platform that allowed me to connect with students from around the world. I was totally responsible for planning the lessons and setting prices. Through this platform I helped students with a variety of different problems, including preparation for the IELTs exam or correction of academic papers.
Hujiang (Online English teaching)
August 2017-February 2019
I taught students in China using Hujiang's online classroom. Most of the students were adults, many of them professionals. For this company the lessons were much more structured. I was required to stick to the provided lesson material and precise time frame. The lessons often involved a role-play section to practice the new language. I had to keep good notes throughout as after each lesson I had to give detailed feedback and recommendations. In this role I helped to improve the lesson content by picking up on language mistakes in the material. In fact I made the company wall of honour for being the teacher who provided the most feedback regarding lesson plans.
Private IELTS Lessons
November 2018-January 2019
Whilst living in Nepal I gave private lessons to a Nepali woman to help her prepare for the IELTS Life Skills test, as required for the "family of a settled person" visa. During the lessons I tried to encourage her to speak as much as possible, with a particular focus on forming questions. We also spent time discussing everyday life and cultural differences in the UK. I found my knowledge of life in Nepal to be very useful in understanding her mindset, and why she may be confused by certain language points.
Private Nepali Lessons
I am currently giving Nepali lessons to a 10 year old girl. I am teaching her both how to speak and how to read a new script. During the lessons we have been creating an alphabet book using the principles of mnemonics, and practicing various language points using games and flashcards.
