Gary Roberts Personal Statement
Skills and Competencies
My knowledge and skills include, inter alia:
My employability skills include excellent writing and communication skills gained in professional, voluntary and career development roles [writing reports, preparing agenda, setting up meetings, working with clients]. My organisational and administrative skills have been extensively improved and developed over the past fifteen years with office administration a fundamental element of that development. [Pragmatic, Proactive, using initiative, listening]
Professionally I have developed a full ICT Induction programme catering for beginners, intermediate and advanced candidates [available to peruse]. This role also included the initial marking of papers and the processing of second marking while also forwarding the work to the external verifier of the awarding body. [OCR or City and Guilds] The development of a bespoke database for recording the progress of learners was also a key part of this role. [in-line with data protection: password protected]
Other responsibilities included having a varied caseload of clients with challenging issues such as drink, drug and previous criminal convictions problems. Empathy and respect but not sympathy are essential and key skills that I developed while dealing with these otherwise mature, creative and intelligent individuals. The knowledge I gained on the cognitive behaviour patterns of my clients over a two-year period is/was an invaluable learning and development skill that has improved my overall holistic approach to teaching/training. I was also a volunteer assessor within my local CAB office.
A mature and proactive attitude to achieving set goals that have resulted in taking a criminal justice foundation degree at the age of 48. This degree was successfully completed in September 2012 with six distinctions and three merits at its core and was achieved by excellent empirical research skills. Moreover, the results of my final dissertation on the financial needs of offenders, ex-offenders and their families were included in the internal newsletter of the Essex Probation Trust. An academic transcript and academic reference is available. I also have the PTLLS, Assessor and Safeguarding Children [V2] awards.
Voluntarily, I founded, created, developed and chaired local tenant and resident groups in my local community. These groups allowed me to work proactively with the police, highways, council officers, councillors and the sitting MP. This role also developed my research and report writing skills by way of preparing meetings; writing agendas, minutes and reports on important issues affecting the community.
