A soon to be Newcastle University History and Politics graduate offering 1:1 History tuition

Methodology

I give lessons to GCSE students and below. As a tutor I find it much more worth while to find out what each student struggles with for example, essay writing, primary source analysis or content. History is a skills based subject and so my lessons will be structured around building on these key analytical skills that are required to gain the top level marks.

Experience

I am a History and Politics student currently studying at Newcastle University. I have experience working with younger children in a learning environment but wish to extend this to GCSE level work. I have passion for history and want to inspire as many students as possible to find the subject as interesting as I do!

WORK EXPERIENCE:
Marks and Spencer Christmas Temp: December 2020
I worked during the busiest Christmas season at M&S. I was trusted to organise the shop floor and maintain the correct number of people in line with Covid regulations. I was able to effectively communicate with the public and ensure health and safety was adhered to.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
• Stocking shelves
• Counting customers
• Date checking produce

Gibside National Trust Catering Assistant: October – January 2019/2020
Whilst undertaking my studies in Newcastle, I worked at the café in Gibside undertaking many responsibilities during this role. For example, I was trusted to make and prepare food and clean the kitchen to health and safety standards. It was an environment of high pressure with many customers every day which often meant juggling multiple roles at once and calling on teamwork to help.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
• Barista
• Kitchen porter
• Prepare and run food
• Operate the till
• Cleaning down the kitchen and café

The Maynard Hotel waitress: June 2018 – October 2019
I worked in many roles during my year at the Maynard Arms covering both bar and restaurant settings. The hotel specialised in cooperate events and weddings which meant our standard of service was exceptional. This experience trained me to organise and communicate efficiently in difficult situations whilst maintaining excellent customer service throughout. I was given responsibility during my time at the Maynard including opening the hotel in the mornings and managing the breakfast shift without management. This would mean opening and preparing the hotel ready for the day and ensuring the kitchen was ready to serve breakfast. I was sad to leave due to redundancy.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
• Barmaid
• Waitress
• Housekeeping
• Breakfast (without management)

Teatime Club Assistant at Sheffield High School. September 2017– May 2018:
Working at Sheffield High School Infant and Juniors supervising 4–11-year-old children at their after-school club.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
• Serving of food and drink.
• Cleaning up food and drink waste.
• Overseeing the children in their games and activities
• Helping with homework

VOLUNTEERING:
FareShare North East: 2020 – current
I currently volunteer my time to Fare Share North East as a media and website content coordinator. I am currently working towards improving their website by writing articles and blog posts. I have also contributed to their Instagram page.
Primary duties:
• Writing blog posts and articles for website
• Managing social media

Sheffield High School Reading Assistant: 2018
Whilst at 6th form, I volunteered to help the KS2 children with their reading. I supervised whilst they read aloud and then helped with any difficulties including spelling and pronunciation.
Primary duties:
• Listening to KS2 reading
• Spelling and pronunciation

SHINE Mentor: 26th November 2016– 18th March 2017
Through the SHINE scheme, children from primary schools across Sheffield visited Sheffield High School once a week for a 14-week course with the aim of promoting the importance of education through nurturing learning skills and communication techniques. As a member of the volunteer team, I worked with fellow mentors as teaching assistants helping to organise and supervise activities for the children.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
• Supervising children during organised activities and their break
• Writing progress reports on the children during their development through the scheme.

I have known Sophie very well for 10 years now and we have remained very close friends throughout school and university. She is an incredibly patient and selfless person who makes every effort to help others.

She has often helped me with challenging school work and has explained complicated subjects in a clear and easy to understand way with a friendly manner and good humour that made even the most tedious topics interesting and fun.

She is unfailingly kind and empathetic and often goes out of her way to make sure other people are ok. I would highly recommend her as a tutor, as I am sure she would be able to help other people with the same dedication and generosity as she did with me.

Sophie is a person who has kindness and creativity at her core - two incredibly important characteristics for a tutor. She will always have patience for a student and never make them feel as though they need to be worried about asking a ‘stupid’ question. No matter the student’s ability, I know she will always be happy to help. Her artistic mindset helps her come up with creative solutions to any challenge - she can definitely translate this into creating unique ways of helping a tutee!

Sophie always gives 100% to any task she’s given and she never lets anyone down! Her natural ability to build strong relationships with people would make anybody look forward to her tutoring sessions.

To me, all these qualities are exactly what you want out of a tutor!
