Stefan - Catford - Music Theory

About the lesson

Stefan Knapik

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach cello, piano and theory. Having had extensive academic training, I am also able to offer tuition in music history/musicology up to degree level.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I studied the cello with David Smith and Lionel Handy at the Royal Academy of Music, where I also gained the Academy's licence to teach (L(RAM)).

In 2010 and 2011 I internationally toured contemporary dance pieces by renowned choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Gregory Maqoma. For this I improvised and composed the live music, collaborating with 3 Indian Classical Musicians.

I completed my PhD at Magdalen College, Oxford, and have taught several subjects within musicology to Oxford undergraduates.

I gained my BMus and Masters (in historical musicology) from King's College, London.

- How much do you charge?

My rate for teaching the cello is £35/hr, with the option of having half hour lessons at £22/hr, and 45 minute lessons at £28/hr.

My rate for all other subjects (see above), including piano and music theory is £30/hr, £24/45 minutes and £18 for 30 minutes.

These rates include my travel expenses.

Sometimes it's possible to teach groups of suited students, in which case I would be able to offer discounted fees.

- Where do you teach?

I am based in South East London, zone 2, but usually travel to pupils, and am willing to travel to any location in London. I may also be able to offer lessons at my home in Brockley.

South East areas are good for me: New Cross, Brockley, Greenwich, Lewisham, Blackheath, Woolwich, Peckham, Camberwell, Bermondsey, Elephant & Castle, Southwark, London Bridge, Canada Water, Surrey Quays, Canary Wharf, Docklands, Canning Town.

East is also good: Whitechapel, Hoxton, Shoreditch, Dalston, Highbury & Islington

But I'm willing to travel anywhere within reason, including to Bayswater, Kensington, Chelsea, Camden, Hampstead, Belsize Park, Highgate,

- When are you available?

I'm very flexible with regards to times and am looking to take on pupils now. I am committed to teaching and performing in London this academic year, and will not be touring.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Having had experience of teaching a wide variety of age groups and kinds of learners, I am able to teach any age and level.

Having worked on singing/composing projects in 15 primary schools for English Pocket Opera Company and Scottish Opera, I am able to take a fun and varied approach with younger children, but my experience and academic training makes me suited to teaching adults, and I particularly enjoy this.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I have, and continue to, prepare my students for ABRSM Grade exams, and for academic subjects, GCSE, A Level, and degree level.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I am able to offer lessons on Skype.

About Stefan

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have given around 2,500 hours of tuition over the past nine years. I have taught in several primary and secondary schools across London, and privately. I am skilled at teaching both children and adults and have taught a wide age range, from 4 to 64!

What I uniquely offer over other classically trained performers are strong improvisatory abilities - because of my training in composition and my work with dancers and word musicians, I am very good at developing musical material with pupils by ear - so, for example, working with chord sequences, with a jazz riff, or with an Indian raag. Many of my pupils have found this fun and therapeutic.

Many of my lower ability students, particularly my piano pupils, have enjoyed working out pop songs they know, on the piano, and adding chords underneath.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have a DBS check dating from January 2013.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Royal Music Association.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I currently have a wide range of students, including a four year-old cellist, a mother and three children who all learn piano, a young professional who learns the cello with me, a talented teenage saxophonist who is working towards grade 5 theory, as well as the undergraduates at my College, Magdalen, who have recently studied musical expressionism in the early-twentieth century with me.
