Steven - Sloane Square - Composition

Methodology

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I primarily teach Composition and Theory, and also teach beginner Piano and Bassoon up to Grade 4.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

BMus (Hons) (GradRNCM) in Composition: First-Class Honours

MMus in Advanced Composition: Distinction (RCM) HR Taylor and Leverhulme Scholar

Currently a scholar with the Arts and Humanities Research Council, studying for a DMus in Advanced Composition at the RCM.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £30 for an hour's teaching in composition, bassoon and piano; and £20 for 30minutes. These figures are a guide and are dependent on how far I may have to travel.

- Where do you teach?

I teach at the student's home. I live in Walthamstow, but I am willing to travel almost anywhere within Zone 2.

- When are you available?

I am available 7 days a week, both daytime and evenings, and I am happy to teach in school holidays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I will teach any student over the age of five. For composition and theory I will teach from beginner to diploma and beyond; and beginner piano and bassoon.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

As a composer I have worked with the Arditti Quartet, the BBC Singers, the Danel Quartet, London Contemporary Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, The Composers Ensemble, Contemporary Consort, Britten-Pears Ensemble, Klangforum Wien and the Moscow Studio for New Music.

I have worked as an animateur in the Manchester area, leading composition workshops in schools and sixth-form colleges, encouraging students to compose short works for bassoon for me to perform, and subsequently submit for their GCSE and A-level compositions.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I do not currently have a CRB disclosure certificate.

- Where and with whom did you train?

My undergraduate studies took place at the Royal Northern College of Music, under the tutelage of David Horne and Gary Carpenter.
Awarded a full scholarship to the the Masters course at the Royal College of Music, and with additional funding from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust and the prestigious Vaughan Williams Scholarship, I studied under Jonathan Cole and Mark-Anthony Turnage.
I have since returned to the RCM to pursue a doctorate in composition, continuing my tuition with Jonathan Cole, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
Having been awarded the famous Mendelssohn Scholarship in 2008, I have attended a number of influential Summer Schools in the UK and Europe, working with Oliver Knussen, Colin Matthews and Magnus Lindberg in Aldeburgh; with Brian Ferneyhough, Wolfgang Rihm, Misato Mochizuki, Isabel Mundry, Klaus Lang and Manos Tsangaris in Darmstadt, Germany; and Enno Poppe, Beat Furrer, Brice Pauset and Vladimir Tarnopolski at "impuls" in Graz, Austria.
