- What kind of experience do you have?
I qualified as a teacher in 2006 from the University of Sussex, having successfully completed A PGCE to accompany my BA (hons) History. While completing my NQT (Newly Qualified Teacher) year in a lovely rural secondary school in the heart of Sussex, I discovered a love of teaching not only History, but also the core subjects of maths and English which so often provide the backbone of pupils' academic development.
After this, I focused my energies on teaching maths and English and, after a short spell covering maternity leave in a primary school in Kent, was invited to teach Year 5 full time. Having worked predominantly in Secondary and higher education, this was a welcome opportunity to see how pupils develop their understanding early on, as well as pick out where gaps in their knowledge may begin to occur.
Throughout this time, I continued to tutor privately and found great reward in seeing students profit and develop from the drive and confidence one to one tuition offers. I now work only in a tutoring capacity, including four days employed professionally as a GCSE/KS3 tutor within two state sector schools in Canterbury. This has given me the chance to work with pupils of varying ages and abilities within a school setting, planning work and sessions to support their class work. Furthermore, I am responsible for visiting several students at home who are outside of the school system for different reasons (vulnerable/behavioral/cared for), as well as continuing to teach privately.
My main areas of expertise are maths & English from KS1 to GCSE, 11+/Kent Test and History to GCSE. My ongoing links with the schools ensures that I can remain abreast of any curriculum changes or educational developments.
