I am an 11+, 13+ and ISEB Pre Test specialist in English and Maths. An Oxford graduate, I'm an experienced teacher in my early 40s. My appproach is based on connecting to tutees as people. We focus clearly on comprehension methodology, so that it becomes second nature to a student, allowing them to actively work out how to get the higher marks. I also explore planning for writing, but in a way that unlocks a child's creativity.
My rate includes all the material you will need for 11+ Maths and English. I have a bank of bespoke material designed for this. I've taught English and Maths at a top London prep school (St Philip's; rated outstanding) for three years. Six of my pupils gained entry to City of London Boys this year, following my training. I've also successfully prepped children for entry to KCS Wimbledon, Eton, Westminster, Haberdashers, QE Grammar, and Henrietta Barnett.
My first lesson is all about learning what skills the student needs to practise. We will usually read a passage - then I ask questions about how the student will find the right info. Where are they looking? Why? What's the key word? Have they read before and after the key word? Have they looked back at the question? We deconstruct carefully their written answer and compare it to the question. I instill independent thinking in my student's so they can analyse themselves whether or not they have put down the right details on multi mark questions.
At 11+ and 13+ I very much respond to the child's way of working to quickly get to the root of any problems. I get them to understand the fundamentals of a mathematic or English principle, before giving them rigorous practice. At GCSE and A level i get into the nuts and bolts of essay structure, analysis of imagery, themes, and techniques. I break things down in every day language and then link this to the mature techniques required.
I have a first in English from Bristol, a Masters from Oxford in Politics, and I am a PhD candidate in English at Royal Holloway.
I am fun and naturally funny, tap into a student's natural interests, and train them rigourously in the ways of 11+ and 13+. I have bespoke material. There is no need for you to supply papers!
I absolutely love what I do. Previously, I was a BBC & Channel Four television producer, and then a specialist on the political economy of India.

Perfect! Nigel very quickly understood how to make the tutoring appeal to my son and has been encouraging him and challenging him in his learning. My son looks forward to his lessons and even asks me to ask Nigel for more homework!
Pellis is extremely bright and quick with his Maths. He also uses a range of sophisticated vocabulary and some higher level punctuation. We are focusing on extending his explanations in his comprehension answers.
Nigel is an incredibly knowledgeable and patient teacher. He has an energetic and yet calming approach, as well as a wealth of different strategies that he uses to help build knowledge, understanding and confidence in pupils.
Nigel Singh teaches with great enthusiasm and structure. He makes the lessons fun and explains useful ways for children to orientate all english literature and language tasks. He taught my son both in a school environment and on a one to one and I can't recommend him enough.
I worked with Nigel at a preparatory school in London and he is a warm and interesting person. I had the pleasure of seeing him teach a few times and he was enthusiastic, engaging, passionate, and rigorous. He made Maths and English lessons interesting, and got excellent results. I also saw him do 1:1 work with pupils and his interest in helping them was clear - he really wanted the best for each student as was willing to put a lot of effort into helping them achieve it. I would have loved to have had someone like him as a tutor when I was that age.
Nigel taught my son Maths and English in year 5. He brought out my son's talent in English, and encouraged him in Maths. My son said Nigel was one of the best teachers he ever had.
