Suva - Southgate - Maths

Methodology

I am a full-time professional maths and physics tutor, with an ability to inspire and foster a love of learning (and have fun in the process!).

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Maths and Physics.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

- 2:1 in MSci Physics with Theoretical Physics from Imperial College London (first class achieved in years 1, 2 and 4 with a 75% average in the final year)
- Distinction in MSc Quantum Technologies from the University of Leeds
- PhD in Quantum Information from the University of Leeds

See my uploaded CV on the right (under 'my files') for more details.

- How much do you charge?

My rates depend on the level of tuition sought (see above).

Unlike some tutors, I meticulously plan and tailor each lesson to the needs of each individual tutee and don't spend valuable lesson time setting homework (I set homework via email). Coupled with the quality of teaching I offer, I therefore believe my rates represent value for money.

- Where do you teach?

At present, all of my teaching is done at home, with students travelling to me or via online tuition. In the past I have travelled locally (Southgate, Winchmore Hill, Enfield) and as far away as Camden and St. Johns Wood.

- When are you available?

I am flexible, please contact me to find out availability.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

KS3, GCSE and A-level (including entrance examinations such as the PAT), adult learners.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

My online lessons are delivered using skype (or equivalent) and an online whiteboard. This whiteboard can be seen and written on simultaneously by myself and tutee, and is flexible and easy to use. The tutee has access to the whiteboard after the lesson, and a pdf of the whiteboard contents can be created. I ask for pictures/scans of the homework to be sent to me before the next lesson.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

My aim is to help students realise their potential and appreciate the wider significance of physics and maths. To this end, I try to impart a genuine understanding of concepts and guard against rote memorisation. In particular, I enjoy discovering original ways to present standard material, and use powerful tools such as videos and simulations to make abstract concepts seem more concrete. I strive to make concepts 'come alive' or more tangible wherever possible by using simple practical demonstrations. A favourite of mine is to use a guitar or acoustic piano to demonstrate ideas in vibrations and waves (a core topic in GCSE, A level and university physics).

I teach in a relaxed fashion, and strive to establish a bond between the tutee and myself such that the tutee feels comfortable to learn. I ensure that students have a sound grasp of the basics before moving onto more challenging topics. Material is covered at a speed which is comfortable for the student. Indeed, I encourage tutees to 'flag up' any difficulties or confusion they may have so that extra time can be spent dealing with these. As well as setting homework problems (there is no way to learn physics and maths other than doing lots of problems!), I will often set little questions in the midst of a lesson to see if the student is getting it! When appropriate, I set homework that is more open-ended/enquiry based to encourage students to take ownership of their learning. Examples include understanding how electric circuits work using simulations, and investigating mathematical relationships using online software.

I am careful in ensuring that the syllabus is covered, and have an extensive collection of past exam papers and solutions of the various examination boards. This being said, I am not afraid of going a bit beyond the syllabus (when appropriate) and teaching students more than what they 'need to know to do well on the exam'. An example of this is exposing students to certain chapters of Feynman`s celebrated lectures on physics (written primarily for undergrads) in order to broaden their horizons.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have 10+ years of teaching experience in various settings. This includes working at a Saturday school (run by Civitas schools), tutoring as a private tutor and being a teaching assistant for 2nd year courses on thermodynamics and quantum mechanics at the University of Leeds.

From autumn 2014 to present, I have tutored just under 50 GCSE and A-level students, both in-person and online.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an enhanced DBS certificate (issued 2/12/16).

- Where and with whom did you train?

I have learnt how to teach/tutor from all the settings in which I have taught. This includes learning from former colleagues at a Civitas Saturday school and course lecturers at the University of Leeds (for whom I was a teaching assistant).

As a professional educator though the learning and training never stops: I am always striving to undergo 'continuous professional development'. I actively network with other educators - be they independent or part of an agency such as Tutorfair - to reflect and learn from them to make the learning experience for my tutees more interesting and inspiring.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

- Numerous GCSE and A-level maths/physics students (both boys and girls, taught 'in-person')

- A number of online students, some from outside of London (Norfolk and Hull) and even as far away as Moscow.

- A student of mine has just started (Aug 2017) A-level physics and maths with me having studied these subjects for two years with me for his IGCSE exams. He received A*s in both IGCSE maths and physics.

Suva has really transformed my son's understanding of physics. He now receives A* grades without excessive cramming or stressful breakdowns that can occur as a result of failing to understand a subject despite hours of hard work. He ensures that students receive the right balance of exam technique tips and actual understanding of the topic at hand. I have found him to be friendly and keen to engage with light banter and chat with my son so that lessons never seem overly demanding to him.

Suva has been an extremely useful person in helping me understand physics to higher level and helping me progress well in my A levels. His teaching shows a deep and thorough understanding of the content relevant to course and he always strives to teach beyond the syllabus in order to gain a more fundamental understanding of course material. This has helped me gain a wider interest in physics and has especially helped me with my physics A level.

Suva is the exception to the rule - he delivered what he promised and helped my son to navigate the complexities of Maths and Physics to a high standard of understanding. I have no hesitation in recommending him.
