I have had a life time of professional cello playing and over 30 years teaching experience so I have much to pass on to anyone wanting to learn to play this beautiful instrument.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach the acoustic cello but also have an electric cello if anyone is interested. The latter is more suitable for advanced players who want to try something different.
I love to get cello trios or quartets together if people are interested. I have an excellent selection of music and am happy to arrange pieces for specific groups.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I achieved a teaching diploma with distinction some time ago so experience counts more at this stage.
- How much do you charge?
£35 per hour for individual cello lessons.
£40 for string quartet or cello quartet coaching.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at home and take pupils from Malvern, Worcester, Bromsgrove, Evesham, Hereford, Gloucestershire, Kidderminster, etc.
- When are you available?
Monday to Thursday at flexible times.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages and levels from 7 years old upwards.
I have several adult and retired students. Some want to revisit the cello, others are absolute beginners.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Either Trinity or Associated Board but only if the student feels comfortable with exams. They are certainly not for everyone and it depends on the motivation level of the student.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I definitely like to work individually with each student and at their own pace. Everyone has different requirements and I try my best to tune in to each person's way of learning.
Playing should be a happy experience although this does only come with effort as with most things in life.
I am quite fussy about technique as it is the foundation of a good cello sound. That is what holds the music together and makes it come alive.
- What kind of experience do you have?
More or less everything I ever wanted to do on the cello.....opera, ballet, symphonies,
quartets, duos, jingles, radio work, and lots and lots of teaching to adults and children.
Cello playing and teaching has been my life's work.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Where and with whom did you train?
Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal College
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Musicians Union for many years but no longer.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Currently, I have beginners to post grade 8 students and adults.
I taught a young girl from the age of 6 to 18. She had asperges and her mother had to show me how to get her attention in lessons to start with. We played a lot of games and one favourite piece was played at the end of every lesson for 18 months. She went on to study music at university after getting a distinction in grade 8 Associated Board.
Another pupil who was a very advanced pianist, wanted to learn the cello at the age of 15. She worked every week and by the time she left school, she had a distinction in grade 7 Associated Board.
Suzie Walden was highly recommended to me by two of my friends who were already having tuition with her.
She relates to me as an individual and understands what I am finding challenging. She is very good at analysing my problems and suggesting a solution...... Most recently on the subject of how to improve the quality of my sound.! In addition to the technical aspects of playing she gives me insights into musical interpretation.Suzie has a wealth of experience to share and is very encouraging.
My lessons with Suzanne are always a delight. I bring along orchestral and quartet pieces that I find challenging and within minutes she has demystified them and helped me to play them with confidence. I inevitably come away feeling enthused about playing whatever we have worked on.
Thanks to Suzanne's help I was able to play everything at last night's concert in Sicily. Only got lost once ( failed to repeat in the Trio of Beethoven's First Symphony). Thank you for giving me the confidence.
