Sylvia - St. Albans - Music Theory

Methodology

Music is an enriching subject that can vastly expand one's creative lateral-thinking. I am always trying to bring out the best potential in all my students and firmly believe that everyone can learn to play the piano with the right approach.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Piano, Piano Accompaniment, Theory, Music GCSE, Aural Training, and Sight Reading.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I obtained my MMus from the Royal Academy of Music in London and BMus from the University of Victoria in Canada in 2008. In addition, I hold a Licentiateship diploma in piano pedagogy from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada since 2004.

As a solo pianist and accompanist, I have played at various venues in London including St Bride's Church, St Olave Hart Street, St Johns Waterloo, St. Stephen's Church Gloucester Road.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

5 years old and above
Complete beginners to very advanced players (children and adults).
Group lessons of 2 children of the same age.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

ABRSM, Trinity College of Music/Guildhall Piano Exams, GCSE Music, London College of Music, Rudimentary Theory, and Advanced Harmony, Piano Accompaniment.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

My greatest responsibility as a teacher is making sure all my pupils know how to learn in the most effective and efficient way so they can practice independently. I try to inspire my students with amusing phrases, memorable analogies, and creative ways to guide them through their daily practice. From my personal experience, I've learnt that practising slowly and consciously is more efficient than practising quickly and passively. If we keep in mind that practising is all about quality, not quantity, we can overcome difficult passages in less time.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught piano for 15 years on three different continents (North America, Asia, and Europe). During this time I have worked with pupils from many different cultural backgrounds, aged between 4-80, with skills ranging from novice to advance players. I completed my Associateship Teaching Diploma in 2004, from the Royal Conservatory of Music.

I have also taught and tutored rudimentary to advanced theory (harmony) for the past 15years, for ABRSM exams and undergraduate music courses. All my students pass their ABRSM Grade 5 Theory Exam on their first try. I have taught students in music schools, independent schools, and privately.

Other things I have done in the past include being an accompanist for the Royal Academy of Dance Exams, leading an afterschool theory club, and organising as well as adjudicating a piano competition.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

No.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Hamish Milne from the Royal Academy of Music, London
Ian Parker and Kenneth Broadway in Vancouver
Edward Parker, Burnaby

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I currently have pupils which range from young to mature. My youngest pupil is 4 years old.
I also enjoy teaching adult beginners and advanced students of different backgrounds and learning abilities so please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Music is such a comfort: a world of certain beauty and emotional depth into which we can escape from the vicissitudes of reality. Thank- you, Sylvia!

Sylvia is a patient, enthusiastic, positive, and experienced teacher. She is always armed with a creative approach and uses engaging analogies. She has been the only teacher to-date able to address major technical problems in my playing, such as tension and economy of movement. After 3 months alone I've significantly improved my playing with notable results, receiving 'Commended' performances at the Sutton Music Festival 2009 and continually extending the limits of my musical potential.
