I develop classes for my students on an individual basis, focusing on areas where they need and want most help.
I am a trained Cambridge TEFL teacher, so I know sympathetic, interesting and effective methods. The first step is to understand why and what students want to learn (have they moved to the UK and taken a job in IT or accounting?), progressing from there.
I am a business person who has worked internationally for twenty years, and before that I taught English in Japan. I am a university graduate with degrees in languages and business. I know the challenges of learning a brand-new way of expressing yourself.
A motivated and empathetic teacher and assistant.
Using teaching skills, supported by a great deal of first-hand knowledge about what works and what does not work, helps students progress to their goals.
A successful business person who brings professionalism and quality to teaching, and learning.
Enthusiastic, passionate, persuasive and confident communicator at all levels. Articulate and expressive. Enjoys working with adult students of all abilities, and builds strong relationships with her students.
Results and performance driven. Has learned foreign languages – good French and moderate German and Japanese. Has lived in countries where has had to use foreign languages – France and Japan.
I believe in giving and showing respect. Learning a language as an adult is demanding, so we need to be aware of just how hard people are trying, how scary it can be, and much they depend on the teacher. I know this because I have been there, several times.
I feel it is important to understand what the student is aiming to achieve, and help him or her move ahead, fast.
I do not believe perfection is always necessary for a beginner. It is more important to help people express themselves in ways that are understandable in their actual situation. So – if you are at a supermarket and need to know where you can find cooking oil, for example, you only need to know how to ask questions politely and clearly.
However, if you work in accounting, you need to know exactly the right terms and expressions.
I also believe that learning a language can be enjoyable and people can learn quite quickly.
I use music, artwork, games and puzzles as well as reading/listening reviews.
I also think homework is a really good idea (sorry!), to deepen the knowledge gained in a lesson.
