My teaching is based on understanding the needs of the individual student and tailoring the sessions accordingly. I use a wide range of strategies to improve reading comprehension skills and writing for different purposes. My approach is structured and supportive, breaking down the material and the working process into manageable steps.
A fully qualified teacher of secondary level English Language and Literature, I have 19 years experience of working in both state and independent sector schools. Specialisms include revision for GCSE; help with planning coursework; and Common Entrance, as well as providing skills' support for KS3 and KS4 students with a range of learning styles and needs.
Lessons are £35 an hour online or in my home; £40 in student's own home up to 20km away. Travel further afield than this may incur an extra cost. All sessions must be paid for 24 hours in advance. If a student is ill, the lesson may be rescheduled at my discretion and within my availability. If I cancel for any reason, I offer a full refund.
We have had an excellent experience with Mary helping our Year 8 son with his English studies during lockdown. Mary has worked systematically through different styles of writing, always providing encouragement and constructive feedback. Mary has also helped with exam techniques and how to plan pieces of writing, which I think will be very valuable. Our son enjoys the sessions and says they are really good. We would recommend Mary to other parents without hesitation. Thank you, Mary.
I was Mary's Head of Department for ten years when we worked together in an independent school in Gloucestershire. Throughout the time we worked together, Mary was always incredibly conscientious, innovative, dedicated and caring. She has incredibly high standards and expectations of her students. Year on year she produced outstanding IGCSE results in both English and English Literature: 100% pass rate and high 90's A* - C. Mary was also very successful across the board: with students who found the subject easy and also with those for whom it was more of a challenge. She is an excellent team player, totally reliable and always ready to go the 'extra mile' to help her students achieve the very best they could. I am currently Headmaster of an International school and would employ Mary without a moment's hesitation. She will be a huge asset to your organisation.
Mary is an excellent tutor - I worked with her for 6 years in an independent school English Department - and she was just incredible.
Students always made amazing progress with her, particularly due to her calm manner, and each lesson they left smiling feeling raised up by her brilliant tutelage.
I highly recommend Mary - she's passionate, dedicated, and always gets the results her students deserve...if you're worried about any area of the English curriculum - Mary will be your grade-saver!
