Tigran - Dulwich Village - Music Theory

Methodology

I am a London based pianist, teacher and composer. I have 12 years of teaching experience and recently completed Masters Degree in piano performance with distinction at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach classical piano from beginner to diploma levels.
I also teach Music Theory up to Grade 8 and composition.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

BMus in piano performance 2:1
MMus in piano performance with distinction
Music theory Grade 8 in 2005

- How much do you charge?

£20 for a 30 minute lesson
£30 for a 45 minute lesson
£35 for a 60 minute lesson

- Where do you teach?

I am happy to teach my students at their homes or at my home (I have a modern upright piano). I am happy to travel to teach in Dulwich (East, West and North), Herne Hill, Forest Hill, Denmark Hill, Brixton, Camberwell and Peckham, however other areas in London will also be considered.

- When are you available?

At the moment I have a few spaces to take more students. I have spaces during the week (after 4pm) and on the weekends.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and all levels up to diploma standard.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I am happy to prepare my students for piano exams (grades 1-8 of ABRSM and Trinity College London) and ABRSM theory exams (Grades 1-5).

However preparing students for Grades is not the priority. The priority is to ensure that students receive lessons in a relaxed and friendly environment, to identify and work on the music that would appeal to them most and to encourage them to make the most of the possibilities that they have to develop as musicians.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

It is important to enjoy the experience of learning a musical instrument and to believe in yourselves, whether the piece of music you're playing is simple or difficult to learn. Strong working relationships with teachers and regular practice with understanding of the interpretation of the piece(s) are the key to making noticeable progress. Listening to BBC Radio 3 and going to concerts is highly recommended as these are not only great for expanding the knowledge of classical music but also for giving the inspiration to practise and perform with excitement and passion.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I started teaching in 2006. My first student was a seven year old boy at that time. I am fortunate to still teach him today. He has reached a grade 8 standard and is playing with a highly expressive sound and a fluent effortless technique. Through word of mouth I now have over twenty piano students.

Since I started teaching, I have taught over 50 students. I have experience in teaching complete beginners, children as young as four, teenagers and adults as well as students with special needs, such as autism and dyslexia.

I have experience in preparing students for the following exams ABRSM, Trinity Grades 1-8 piano and ABRSM Grades 1-5 theory.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I have a DBS certificate (2017)

- Where and with whom did you train?

During my childhood in my hometown of Yerevan in Armenia, I was fortunate enough to be taught by one of the country's finest concert pianists - Armen Babakhanyan. Since moving to London I have been a student of Thalia Myers at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, Philip Fowke when I studied for a Bachelor Degree at Trinity Laban and Gabriele Baldocci when I did my Masters Degree also at Trinity Laban.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I have become a member of the London Piano Teachers' Company in 2013.

"Tigran has taught my two boys piano for nine and five years respectively and my older son is now at Grade 8 standard while my younger son is currently studying for his Grade 5 examination. During this time Tigran has been a patient and inspirational teacher and has endowed both boys with a love for playing the piano.
During this time Tigran has also organised fun music competitions for the boys along with recitals in which his many local students have performed. I would have no hesitation in re

"Tigran has taught my children piano for the last 10 years. They have taken exams with ABRSM covering grades 1 to 8 and achieving many Distinctions and Merits. He has also successfully taught my son Grade 5 Music Theory where he gained a Distinction also.

Tigran was also happy to teach pieces which weren't exam based at the children's request for example Christmas Carols etc. As well as running a very successful yearly quiz for all the students to get together and a Concert where they are able
