« I could not have asked for a better tutoring experience. I like to know my progress in any subject and Tracey understood this unlike any other teacher or tutor I had in the past. The in-depth comments I received were allowing me to progress and improve my English rather than causing a hindrance in my performance. I would like to thank Tracey for all her dedication and co-operation until the very last day, I know my accomplishments could not have been fulfilled without her. Thank you! »

Tracey - Cricklewood - School support

Methodology

If you are achieving high results, hoping to raise your grades, or experiencing difficulty, I have relevant experience.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I'm a specialist in English studies and a lot of my tutoring is for A Level, or GCSE, English Literature or Language and Literature. I'm familiar with a range of Exam Boards for secondary studies and have tutored the OCR, AQA, WJEC and Edexcel curriculums. I've taught in two university English departments and tutored students at degree level. If you're a parent, my skills may even be useful to you - CV Writing, editing, proof-reading or a related project.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I completed an English research degree, studied Modern Literature at Queen Mary and have a B.Sc. (Hons) Anthropology/Psychology from Goldsmiths. I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Lifelong Learning at Birkbeck College also. Please see uploaded CV on this site.

- How much do you charge?

£35 per hour for GCSE; £40 per hour for A Level; £40 per hour for degree/postgraduate studies.

- Where do you teach?

I teach in Cricklewood, West Hampstead, Hampstead, Camden, St. John's Wood, Swiss Cottage and Willesden in London.

- When are you available?

I am available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 4 - 7 pm. Daytime and weekends may be possible.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Most students are between 14 - 24 years. I've also worked with adult students, undergraduates, and postgraduates.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

AS and A2 English Literature/Language; GCSE English Literature/Language; B.A. English.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I'm willing to tutor online by email.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Whether you are achieving high results, hoping to raise your grades or experiencing difficulty I have relevant experience.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I've worked with students at a variety of schools on English Literature or Language and Literature. I assisted a GCSE student who was achieving A grades, and wanting to gain an A*, to understand why particular essays were reaching the highest standard. She needed to know what she was doing right to consolidate her achievements. I helped her make use of classroom learning, develop her knowledge and build analytical skills. A young adult enrolled as an external candidate at a private centre considered my suggestions for a choice of novel before electing Vanity Fair for A2 English Language and Literature. This student devised creative, and re-creative, writing tasks including a transcript of a television interview between Piers Morgan and Thackeray's character, Becky Sharpe. I assessed the writing and the marks were subsequently corroborated by the examination board. My experience as an Examiner for AS English with OCR; Moderator for the International Baccalaureate Diploma in Literature and Examiner for GCSE with AQA is useful when working toward exams or on essay-writing skills. I tutored another student over the three years of an English degree at Queen Mary. We worked toward an essay on Dr Faustus for an introductory course and essays in subsequent years including post-colonial literature and eighteenth century writing. I taught in the English Departments at the University of Kent and University of Greenwich.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

DBS 18 February 2013.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Please see uploaded CV.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I recently tutored an A2 English Literature student working on writing skills, and essay development, with one. The sessions built understanding of works by writers including Virginia Woolf, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Graham Greene and Phillip Larkin. I'm currently working with an adult learner who is completing an IGCSE in English Language.

In general the entire process increased my mastery of academic skills and by the end I was able to gain a sense of pride and accomplishment. My most difficult and worst subject turned into the most interesting and enjoyable. I found every essay a thoroughly enjoyable challenge and surprisingly awaited the upcoming lesson. These tutoring sessions gave me passion to write English, and now I find it difficult to sway away from writing an essay.
