Trixi - Ellesmere Urban - Recorder

Methodology

As a patient and encouraging teacher, I warmly welcome all enquiries and look forward to nurturing your love of music, languages and/or yoga. Do feel free to browse through my information and contact me if you have any further queries.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach principally non-classical/ jazz /musical theatre voice and jazz/non-classical piano, jazz harmony/theory, improvising, composition and songwriting, specialising in working with beginners, or people who have been taught classical and want to move over to jazz, but don't know where to start. I also teach classical piano on special request, (having originally trained as a classical pianist), and even here I like to include some improvisation in order to develop the all-round, creative musician. I can also offer RECORDER tuition, ukulele tuition for beginners (tenor, baritone or bass ukulele), help pupils wanting to take theory exams, and am happy to offer support for those who have opted to take music GCSEs or A levels.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have
an MA in music, (University of Wales, Aberystwyth),
an MEd (University of Wales, Cardiff)
a DipLCM (Popular Vocals). In addition, I have undergone professional training at the Orff Institute, Mozarteum, Austria (Creative Music Making in the Classroom) and Trinity College of Music, London, Jazz Faculty (Jazz Piano, Voice & Composition).

- How much do you charge?

My fees from January 2020 are as follows:
£17 per 30 mins (usually for children under the age of 12)
£27 per 45 mins (£24 over 65s & unemployed concessions)
£32 per 1 hour (£29 concessions)
£48 per 90 mins (£45 concessions

Pupils will be able to book a taster session for one-off payment for the lesson. From that point on, fees are usually paid in advance on a month-by-month basis, once we have agreed lesson dates for the month.

- Where do you teach?
Ellesmere, Shropshire,in my own music room.
Lessons take place on a Challen baby grand piano and/or a Yamaha Piaggero NP V 80 keyboard. Singers can work acoustically, with a Shure microphone and - for piano/singers, can learn how to use a head mic. RECORDER students (treble only) should bring their own instrument.

- When are you available?

Music teaching days currently Mondays and Wednesdays to Fridays, afternoons and some evenings.

If I am around during holidays and pupils would like lessons I tend to continue the lessons through holidays and half terms.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?
From age 6 or 7 upwards (very occasionally 5, but this depends on the child's physical and musical readiness). With small children who are not quite ready for the piano, we can work on singing and general musicianship until they are ready, in order to allow them musical expression when they are already showing enthusiasm for music. There's no upper limit. Very happy to take on beginners at all ages, or more experienced musicians.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

ABRSM Jazz Piano Grades any grade
ABRSM Classical any grade
ABRSM Prep test recorder
ABRSM Theory exams
LCM Pop vocals any grade
LCM Musical theatre any grade
LCM Pre-preparatory, Step 1 & 2 musical theatre (for little singers/complete beginners)
LCM Pre-preparatory, Step 1 & 2 piano (for little pianists/complete beginners)
Victoria College self-accompanied singing (piano/voice,) any grade
Victoria College self-accompanied singing (tenor or baritone ukulele/voice) grades 1-3
Trinity and Rockschool if requested.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Music is a gift.
Every note we play or sing with care, attention and enjoyment is a gift to our listeners.
Next time you worry about a performance, or an exam, consider how you can lift a person's day through your music.
Remember, examiners HAVE to sit through all these exam performances. With the right intention, you can use your performance to make the examiner's day, to make him or her glad to have come to the exam session.
Likewise, before a performance, think about the stressful day that your audience might have had. How can you use your music and your performance to relax your audience members, and make them glad they came out to hear you? When you practise your music, practise it as though you are creating a wonderful Christmas gift to someone you care about.
Above all - enjoy your music making and practice - let it also be your gift to yourself!

Experience

I have been teaching piano & theory, since 1985, jazz piano/voice since 1998 and recorder & ukulele (soprano/tenor and baritone) since 2015. I also regularly run voice workshops, both in the UK and in Greece. I've run music workshops for a great variety of groups - children (able bodied and also severely disabled), adults, people with self-confidence issues, mental health issues (for HertsMIND network) and plenty of sing-for-fun workshops. I am a composer and author, and have written plenty of educational music: songs for children around keystage 2, accessible choir songs for schools/voice workshops/community choirs, modern recorder repertoire, piano music, as well as material for people who think they can't, or shouldn't sing. I am an actively gigging musician I solo as a vocalist/pianist, performing swing, latin, classic pop, blues and original number. Additionally I play piano for Tribeca Jazz Ensemble, and baritone/bass ukulele with the Ukulele Monster. Currently I act as Musical Director for Welshampton's Pantomime.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate which is automatically updated annually.

- Where and with whom did you train?

University of Wales, Cardiff & Aberystwyth (between 1978-1984, 1993-4)
Orff Institute, Salzburg, Austria (1982)
Trinity College of Music London (Nick Weldon - piano, Trudy Kerr - jazz voice, Anton Browne - jazz voice, John Thomas- composition) (2001-2)

College of Sound Healing 2008 - 2010
Additional sessions also with Anita Wardell - jazz voice and vocal improvisation, 2001-2
Annually I take part in Continued Professional Development with CoSH, and NVN.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Musician's Union (Teachers' & Composers' section)
Natural Voice Network
College of Sound Healing (Tutor Member)

- Tell me about some of your current students.

2019 has been an excellent year for music students. Of the candidates, many attained a distinction, some attained at least a merit, or a very respectable pass. The average mark thus far this year is 85%. It's been a privilege to teach, but also to enjoy seeing the progress of those not taking exams, and playing or singing purely for their own pleasure.

Students are only entered into exams if they really want to have a go (hence the relatively small numbers), and never if they don't fancy it.

Your voice workshops have been splendid, both musically and socially. To see how you can turn a group of disparate people into a happy, motivated and integrated choir in a mere 2-3 hours is astonishing

Trixi has a lovely, patient style of teaching which is particularly well suited for the nervous or young student. Even so she is able to encourage students to high achievement, with a strong coaching aspect which is essential for performers. My daughter started jazz piano from scratch and had a Distinction in Grade 2 within 2.5 years!

Definitely a good choice for those who are uncertain of themselves as singers.

Trixi is not only a very well-rounded expert in her field but she's the most pleasant, humorous, warm, understanding, encouraging teacher you could wish for. Fear evaporates. You forget to feel self-conscious, and give in to enthusiasm and joy instead. With Trixi you're in safe hands. Just relax, let her knowledge and experience guide you, her passion infect you, and enjoy the learning process!

Trixi is unique - a few simple words, but she enhanced my enjoyment of life with her approach, enthusiasm, humour and subject matter knowledge.

Trixi Field was recommended to me by a friend and I went to my first lesson in trepidation. Trixi was very patient with me and within no time at all I was really looking forward to my weekly lesson and a good old sing. Trixi gave me confidence. I have since joined a community choir and also a local folk group. I shall miss you Trixi and will always be so grateful I had the courage to make that first telephone call to you!

My daughters have been taught piano by Trixi for several years and have loved her lessons, my older daughter has just passed her Grade 1 exam. She also had singing lessons with Trixi which she thoroughly enjoyed and went onto passing her Grade 1 exam in popular music. Trixi is a lovely lady with a friendly, calming personality which her students love! We were sorry to lose her when she moved away!

Trixi guided me through to a distinction in my grade 3 exam. Her piano accompaniment was excellent and she was very encouraging.

Trixi is very professional in her approach yet patient and friendly.
She painstakingly took her time to teach our daughter and encouraged her in her endeavours.
She is indeed a teacher who cares deeply for her students.
My daughter passed her two exams with a distinction and Merit. All testament to Trixi's teaching skills.
She comes highly recommended.
