Having just graduated from Imperial College London and the Royal College of Music with a BSc Physics and Musical Performance (2:1) I am well placed to give expert tuition in brass instruments, specialising in trombone.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I am able and willing to teach Trombone up to an advanced level and Euphonium, Trumpet and Tuba up to ABRSM Grade V.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied the BSc Physics and Music Performance at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Music graduating with second class (upper division) honours. This is a unique degree containing elements of the courses from both universities and is designed to leave both music and physics open as a career path afterwards. Previously I gained four As at A-level in Physics, Music, Maths and Further Maths and five A*s, five As and two Bs at GCSE.
- How much do you charge?
I charge a flat £30ph which includes any travel costs I may have to incur.
- Where do you teach?
As I am currently moving house I am not aware of the situation regarding neighbours so cannot offer tuition at my house though I do hope to in the near future. My primary area for tuition is around Kensington, Fulham and Hammersmith but am happy to travel to areas surrounding this.
- When are you available?
Currently I am available Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the week, Saturday mornings and Sunday all day. As tutoring usually has to fit around the school day I generally tutor from 4pm onwards and am happy to tutor until 8pm or 9pm depending on the student. I will usually try to time lessons so that the travel works out at a minimum.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
The lowest age I believe a brass instrument should be learnt from is 8 and so I will only teach students who are 8 and over due to the physical strength needed to play the instrument. I am happy to enter students for ABRSM examinations if they wish but tend to only advise taking grades III and above. On trombone I am happy to teach up to grade VIII and beyond but on Euphonium, Trumpet and Tuba I will only teach up to grade V before recommending people find a new tutor who is a specialist on their instrument.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been tutoring around Fulham for a year now as well as taking units of university work on tuition and tuition techniques
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
No. I have never worked for an organisation which requires a CRB check and hence have not had to be checked. I can say that I have no criminal record and hence can see no reason why I would not pass a CRB check if I was checked.
- Where and with whom did you train?
On trombone, which I started learning myself in 1999, I have studied with Chris Houlding privately (05-08) (Vice Chair, International Trombone Association) and with Graham Lee (08- ), Roger Harvey (09-11) (Principal Trombone, BBC Symphony Orchestra) and Lindsay Shilling (11- ) (Principal Trombone, Royal Opera House) at the Royal College of Music.
