Trystan-Ross - Central Birmingham - Music Theory

Methodology

Music is the cure to negative emotion via a release through a positive medium. Make the most of it...

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I can teach ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall graded exams, music theory, jazz theory, advanced jazz harmony, extended techniques and ensemble discipline. I specialise on the trombone but I can also teach other brass instruments from beginner to high intermediate standard at which point I would recommend a specialist teacher.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

My degree is a Bmus Jazz and I have three A-Levels and 13 GCSE's (A*-C)

- How much do you charge?

£20 per hour is my standard rate (£10 for 30 minutes) I would recommend beginners and students under the age of 14 to have 30 minutes every week and more advanced students over the age of 14 to have either an hour every week or every two weeks. I can also offer a consultation lesson at £15 for one hour. This allows time to get acquainted and to assess the requirements of the student.

- Where do you teach?

I live in the Jewellery quarter, just off St Paul's Square so I can teach at home, or I can teach in a practice room at Birmingham Conservatoire (Paradise Place). The nearest stations to these are Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Snow Hill. I can also drive to most places around the Birmingham area.

- When are you available?

I can teach from 3 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 3pm to 6.30pm on Thursdays and anytime on Saturdays and Sundays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I can teach all levels from beginner to advanced. I wouldn't advise anyone to start playing a brass instrument without their top front two adult teeth (i.e. anyone younger than about 7) as these change the shape of the mouth as they grow resulting in having to rebuild the embouchure from scratch. Otherwise, anyone, young or old regardless of age or ability.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught one to one lessons for 5 years (although I took a couple of years break to concentrate on studies for my degree). I have also worked as an assistant director for the Hampshire Music Service in their Youth Jazz Orchestra which involved aiding in direction of rehearsals for the main band and training band and co-ordinating large groups of young musicians at concerts.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have a valid CRB disclosure certificate acquired when working for the Hampshire Music Service. It expires in June 2011 at which point I plan to get it renewed.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I started my musical training through the Hampshire Music Service who offered me a scholarship to continue my studies with specialist teachers from the Hampshire area. I worked my way through the ranks of the Hampshire Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Southampton Pops Orchestra eventually rising to section leader in all of these ensembles. I auditioned in 2005 for music college and took up my place on the Birmingham Conservatoire Bmus Jazz (hons) course in September 2006 and since starting my studies there I have recieved tuition from Dave Holland, Jean Toussaint, Julian Siegel, Jeremy Price, Hans Koller, Mike Williams, Percy Pursglove, Ashley Horton, Pete Beachill, Rik Taylor, Wycliffe Gordon, Donny McCaslin, Dave Liebmann, John Hollenbeck, Mike Gibbs and Phil Robson.
