I am a polyglot and trained linguist, passionate about helping people to not only transcend linguistic boundaries but to promote cultural understanding and learning between themselves and those from different backgrounds.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- Tell me about your qualifications.
Mandarin Chinese is my first language. I am also a speaker of another five languages namely Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, Malay and Indonesian with a working knowledge of Spanish, Japanese and Thai. Being a polyglot and a trained linguist, I have developed the skills to draw together common linguistic threads between languages, and to apply these observations to facilitate teaching.
I possess a Master's degree in Linguistics from SOAS, University of London. Through my studies I was able to develop and expand my ability to explain the quirks, subtleties and technicalities of languages clearly in linguistic terms, such as phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics.

My experience working continuously as a private tutor for 4 years, as well as conducting research for linguistic publications, has led me to develop tailor made teaching materials, which I have compiled into usable pedagogical tools, which can cater and adapt to individual requirements. Some of my students have already passed Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK exams) and most have relied upon my tuition to apply their language skills in professional and business, as well as social environments.
Having taught Mandarin in a corporate environment for one and half years at Hogarth Worldwide Ltd, I am confident in the group tuition of students from many diverse backgrounds. I am also able to harmonise different learning styles and manage learning progress of students with mixed abilities.
Apart from assessing students' work and providing guidance, I regularly keep myself up-to-date with the latest technology in language teaching and employ these software and apps in tracking learning progress and assisting language teaching.
