Perfect! As an adult learner with dyslexia seeking additional tuition on writing at a postgraduate level, it can be quite a challenge to get the appropriate help! However, the support I have received from Marcella has been non-judgemental, focused and most importantly of all not overwhelming! She has provided me with excellent support thus far and I'm looking forward to continue to develop my writing ability with her! :)
- Marcella's response : Alex is a great student - enthusiastic and responsive. We are making good progress and had a very constructive conversation this morning about the next stage of his work.
Perfect! Marcella has bridged the gap left by my uni. In plain speech during telephone conversations Marcella told me what was wrong with my essay and told me how to fix it. Marcella read each redraft and gave quality feedback and specific things to work on. Using Marcella was the cleverest thing I did to solve the problem created by my uni's lack of availability.
- Marcella's response : I had a look at Stephen's essay and made some suggestions about improvements he could make. I am looking forward to seeing the edits which, I am sure, will set him on the right path.
Perfect! If you are reading this because you need help with your dissertation, then don’t hesitate to choose Marcella. Her guidance helped me to re-write my dissertation when I realised I needed direction, and her advice always came in a positive and constructive way. Marcella was always approachable, friendly and was exactly what I needed to encourage me to keep going - particularly when I was down to the wire on time, she was there for me every time I needed her to be. When I got really stuck, Marcella always offered a tutorial by phone, and that was invaluable – it wouldn’t have mattered where I was in the world, the use of Google docs was always available, and we could have used Skype if necessary. Marcella’s service of getting work back to me was really quick, and she would always text when she sent something through so even if I was working I knew I could pick up the work as soon as I had the time. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her.
- Marcella's response : I have now had a number of sessions with Helena. She is a great student, responsive and positive. We are working well together and she tells me she is very happy with the way things are going.

Marcella was a great dissertation tutor! When I came to her my dissertation was in its early stages and I was very stressed out about it. After working with Marcella over a period of weeks my dissertation really transformed making me feel more confident in my submission. Marcella helped me with grammar, structure and making sure my writing made sense. I am happy to say I got a First in my dissertation, which I don't think would have been possible without her :)
I would highly recommend Marcella as a dissertation tutor.
She is very talented and has lots of experience in this field. If you are struggling, contact Marcella!!
I have worked as an academic in higher education with Marcella for many years. During that time she has supervised hundreds of undergrad and post-grad student dissertations. Her students often mentioned her empathy, understanding and the fact that she actively listened to them. Marcella's research and pedagogy skills are second to none and her supervision and student support are stellar. Her previous work with students has demonstrated her innate ability to get to the nub of an academic argument and to narrow the thesis, thereby enabling her students to offer sound conclusions and in several cases - new knowledge. I can guarantee that Marcella will help you craft your dissertation into tip-top condition. The rest is up to you ...
I experienced Marcella as a very kind and experienced lecturer. I had fun in her lessons and always had the feeling I received the mark I deserved for my work. In case of questions I could always ask her and I got helpful advice. I think my classmates made the same experience. I enjoyed Marcellas classes very much.
I worked with Marcella at Solent University when she was the course leader for the Media Production Top Up. I found her to be a supportive, sympathetic and engaging course leader. I would have no problem recommending her.
I have worked with Marcella in education for a number of years. She is very knowledgable about the subjects she teaches and is able to communicate well and develops a positive rapport with students of all abilities. Marcella is skilled in identifying areas for an individual student’s development and she helps him or her devise effective strategies and develop confidence to progress in the subject.

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I have always been interested in education, particularly at the higher levels. After a skiing accident, I had to give up the university post I loved. I spent two years reading every novel I could find and then my sister asked me to discuss her Master's dissertation with her. I had forgotten how much I loved the problem solving, the editing and the interaction between ideas. We both got a great deal out of the process and it was then I decided to be a private tutor.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
My own academic interests include English literature, Philosophy, Education theory, Research Methodology and Marketing. However, in my role as academy supervisor I have also worked with students on Psychology, Music Production, Promotional Media, Creative and Media Writing, Public Relations, Nutrition, Criminology, Economics and Business administration.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
My most memorable teachers were always the quirky ones; the teachers who brought the subject to life through their infectious enthusiasm for it.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
To listen, to start from where the student is, to avoid preconceptions, to work at a student's own pace, to be flexible and available, to be systematic, organised and creative, to be a good communicator, to be calm and offer a safe space where students can learn and develop.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
I always had lots of ideas but quickly moved onto other new and exciting ones. My art teacher used to say that ideas are good but you have to see them through. It wasn't until I was at university that I really embraced this idea. My Philosophy class lecturer told us that to be a creative performer you have to know the rules. He equated it with a game of chess: to play chess creatively you need to fully understand the rules of the game. I have always remembered this and try to marry the rules and a creative approach in everything I do.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
When I was young I found exams very stressful, like most people. I found that I performed best when I was calm and to be calm I had to prepare. Planning is key.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I suppose I love the process of making sense of the world. This is why my favourite activity is to work with students in finding ways for them to package their ideas and to present their arguments.
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?
Being a good tutor requires a complicated skill set. Thirty years working with a diverse range of disciplines and students has given me the knowledge and confidence to provide the best possible service.
