When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always been interested in education, particularly at the higher levels. After a skiing accident, I had to give up the university post I loved. I spent two years reading every novel I could find and then my sister asked me to discuss her Master's dissertation with her. I had forgotten how much I loved the problem solving, the editing and the interaction between ideas. We both got a great deal out of the process and it was then I decided to be a private tutor.

  • 02

Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My own academic interests include English literature, Philosophy, Education theory, Research Methodology and Marketing. However, in my role as academy supervisor I have also worked with students on Psychology, Music Production, Promotional Media, Creative and Media Writing, Public Relations, Nutrition, Criminology, Economics and Business administration.

  • 03

Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My most memorable teachers were always the quirky ones; the teachers who brought the subject to life through their infectious enthusiasm for it.

  • 04

What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To listen, to start from where the student is, to avoid preconceptions, to work at a student's own pace, to be flexible and available, to be systematic, organised and creative, to be a good communicator, to be calm and offer a safe space where students can learn and develop.

  • 05

Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I always had lots of ideas but quickly moved onto other new and exciting ones. My art teacher used to say that ideas are good but you have to see them through. It wasn't until I was at university that I really embraced this idea. My Philosophy class lecturer told us that to be a creative performer you have to know the rules. He equated it with a game of chess: to play chess creatively you need to fully understand the rules of the game. I have always remembered this and try to marry the rules and a creative approach in everything I do.

  • 06

What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

When I was young I found exams very stressful, like most people. I found that I performed best when I was calm and to be calm I had to prepare. Planning is key.

  • 07

Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I suppose I love the process of making sense of the world. This is why my favourite activity is to work with students in finding ways for them to package their ideas and to present their arguments.

  • 08

What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

Being a good tutor requires a complicated skill set. Thirty years working with a diverse range of disciplines and students has given me the knowledge and confidence to provide the best possible service.
