I have recently finished my A Level studies and am looking to go to UCL to study Chemistry in September. I am a hardworking, responsible and enthusiastic person who believes that education is valuable and can help to open many doors in a student’s later life, which is why I decided to be a tutor.
I have 11 GCSEs Grade A* to B and have studied Maths, chemistry and Economics at A Level.
To start with, I would need to see where the student is in terms of their strengths and weaknesses in the subject that they struggle with. I would also ask the student what they want to achieve and how they feel that they learn best, as every student learns in a different way. A typical lesson would include a discussion of topics, some questions to do (past papers if relevant) and homework to be completed for the next lesson. I aim to make my students feel confident with a subject that they had previously struggled with and to also enjoy that subject. I understand that tutoring is not only making sure students can do well in their tests and exams but also making sure that they fully understand the concepts that are involved so that they can use their own knowledge to answer more challenging and complex questions.
I haven’t yet got any experience with on-to-one tutoring, but I do have relevant experience. I have done voluntary work at a children’s art class (ages 5+), which involved teaching the children to use the art equipment and helping them to perfect new skills that they had learnt. At school I was a maths prefect, as a part of my responsibilities I helped to run a maths clinic for students with difficulties in their mathematics studies. I also help my younger family members with their homework, helping to solidify their understanding of what they have been taught at school.
