My teaching method focuses on listening to specific problems my students have and working on those problems in a patient and methodical manner. I found at school/college that a friendly and patient approach to learning is the way forward, with constant communication with my student.
I will be happy to go through exam papers and set questions, tailoring each lesson to what level each student is at. Before each lesson I would like to set 1-3 specific and achievable goals to be completed by the end of each lesson, to then be tested at the start of the next lesson to reinforce the new knowledge.
I am a Politics and International Relations (BSc) undergraduate in my second year of university and I have achieved high grades in the subjects I teach at GCSE and A Level.
I am looking to offer a fresh approach to tutoring English to people of various abilities; whether that is teaching the language to a foreign speaker, or to a KS1-GCSE student.
September 2018-January 2019 – Great Cornish Food Store
At the Great Cornish Food Store I worked on both the retail area as well as the café area, acquiring skills from both. On the retail area I worked on the till, helped customers with queries and recommendations, restocked the shelves and sorted the stock room. On the café area I worked as a waiter; clearing tables, taking orders/payment and preparing certain drinks and food. This job allowed me to further my experience of retail, whilst also allowing me to develop proficient waiting skills.
October 2017 – Parliamentary Office of Shadow Minister Cat Smith MP (London, UK)
A week of work experience in the Parliamentary Office of Cat Smith MP, Shadow Minster for Voting Affairs and Youth Engagement: Over the course of the week, as well as shadowing Ms Smith, I worked closely with both her Political Advisor and Parliamentary Assistant. My duties included replying to constituent emails, filing cases into the Caseworker system, researching for her Political Advisor and sitting in on meetings with lobbyists, constituents and other MPs. The experience gave me a deep insight into the world of Westminster and the relationship between MPs and constituents, lobbyists, trade unions and other politicians.
June 2017-September 2017 – Truro Foodbank Volunteer (Truro, UK)
I worked as a volunteer at my local Foodbank sorting donated food and doing stockroom work. During my time at Foodbank I worked as part of a large team of mixed ages; this experience allowed me to build on my teamwork skills acquired from my previous job at Oxfam.
June 2017 – Labour Party Canvassing Volunteer (Truro, UK)
Leading up to the 2017 General Election, I canvassed in my town for support for my local Labour candidate Jayne Kirkham. Whist my candidate did not win the seat for Truro and Falmouth, the Labour vote tripled from 2015, making it now a marginal seat and a very rewarding experience. This experience tested and developed my communication skills with people on their doorsteps and massively improved my confidence in talking about politics.
October 2014-May 2016 – Oxfam Retail Store (Truro, UK)
My role as a volunteer sales assistant included: operating the checkout, dealing with customer queries, arranging the filing system for Gift Aid items, stock control and arranging product displays. Through working at Oxfam, I was able to improve my teamwork skills as part of a large team, whilst also having a wide range of independent responsibilities, ranging from helping customers donate to cashing-up at the end of a shift.
