Although I am now a student of physics at one of the UK's premier science institutes I wasn't gifted with a natural affinity for mathematics and the physical sciences, they simply weren't intuitive to me. It is this aspect which helps me as a tutor as an expert of a field is simply someone who has made every mistake that can be made, which I certainly have!
I am a believer in the power of building a mental picture of what is actually going on. Too often physics and maths are taught in abstraction, this is a mistake, a good analogy builds intuition and intuition is key.
As a tutor my start point is getting to know my student. Their interests, how they feel about the subject, what they are receiving tutoring for and their skill level. Tutor-student rapport is a key priority for me, after all no one payed their utmost attention to a teacher they weren't fond of! Once I have an understanding of what the student needs help with sessions consist of an introduction to the topic of the day, a starter which tests the grasp of the topic, in which questions of escalating difficulty are given attempted in a given time frame. Then the session will alternate between practise and discussion. While education in maths and physics is unavoidably monotonous at times, I will try my hardest to avoid this and present lessons as a puzzle solving exercise akin to a crossword or sudoku rather than brute forcing through work behind a desk.

I am a second year Physics student from the north of England. I have always enjoyed helping my friends and colleagues with their work throughout my education. There is a deep satisfaction in solving a challenging maths puzzle which I greatly enjoy especially when there is a collaborative effort involved.
