My name is Melissa and I am currently a second year university student studying to become a Paediatrician Doctor. Patience is the key to become a successful tutor. Any teacher will tell you that one of the most important qualities that they practice daily is patience. Being patient is vital because each person learns at a different pace.
Successful tutors are on time and prepared. Encourage the student to develop good grades. Ask leading questions in order to help students learn and understand the material. Are patient and provides appropriate "thinking" time. Provides encouragement. Checks the tutee's learning by having the student summarise information at the end of the session. Are aware of and acknowledge cultural differences while treating tutees consistently and with respect. Pay attention and are sensitive to the self-esteem issues of each tutee. Are able to explain concepts from several different angles. Focuses the session on the process of learning. Conducts themselves in a professional manner. I believe that I meet the criteria of a successful tutor.
Oasis Academy Hadley - London - June 2015 to July 2015
Having done my work placement in a school laboratory for two weeks where I gained first-hand information and skills on working in a laboratory. It was one of the most delightful experience of my life. Even though I was not precisely involved in any activities that included harmful substances yet I was part of a team. Getting involved, meeting new people and trying new things helped me feel more connected and confident. It has aided me to build on my self-esteem and confidence. Through my part taking in this scheme, I gained even more skills and developed those that I already have. This experience made me conscious of how vital it is to create trusting relationships with other people. I value this practice considering that I am aware of studying at
the tertiary level will require group work, meaning that it is important that I expand the skills of working with others who are of a different background from me.
Science Mentor - Oasis Academy Hadley
Assisted students by providing study sessions to 10-15 students receiving additional support with their studies. Developed weekly reports on each student and their progress, and of weekly activities. Organised study sessions, weekly personal check. In addition to that, I did work with students on a one-to-one basis outside of the classroom. I also provided group activities, and was involved in out-of-school activities and homework clubs.
I am a hardworking and conscientious individual. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and confident in speaking with every individual. Through my studies and personal life, I have proved to have a natural caring attitude, willing to help others as much as possible. I consider myself as a quick worker but also work neatly which allows me to get the task I have been given done in a professional and efficient manner while also maintaining the highest of standards. A resourceful and dedicated individual with outstanding administrative and organisational skills.
