University student giving maths and science lessons to primary and secondary students in London

Methodology

I am a university student studying mathematics at Imperial College London. I achieved A* in Maths, Further Maths and Physics A-levels. Also I obtained 8 A*s and 2 A's at GCSE (including A*s in Maths, Further Maths and all 3 Sciences). My lessons are individually tailored to each student and aimed at primary, secondary and college students. I build students confidence in Maths and Sciences, make it fun, help improve their study skills, encourage progress, communicate with parents and provide exam tips where necessary.

Experience

I have been tutoring students for 2 years now. I have privately mentored 2 students throughout Year 10 and they achieved a majority of A*s and As. I was also a maths assistant for Year 7 and 8 at my school.

Courses

June 2015 : One week at Oxford University on a STEM taster week. This involved mock lectures and working as a group to solve a series of challenges.

November 2017: Presented a start up business case to local business leaders and school audience as part of a business enterprise competition. As the financial director contributed to business plan, pitch, sales forecasting, and accounts. This gave me invaluable experience in the business sector, presenting skills and developed a range of ‘soft skills’ including teamwork and communication.

Work Experience:

December 2017 to date: Freelance Tutor for Primary, Secondary, GCSE and A-level school pupils in mathematics and science.

August 2015 to September 2018: Gujarat Hindu Society - Volunteering Co-ordinator for a Youth Club – supervise young children, age 6-16, in sports activities and act as the Club Treasurer.

September 2017 to May 2018: Bolton School Boys’ Division - Volunteer as a teaching assistant in mathematics lessons for pupils from year 7 to 9.

February 2018: Rolls Royce (1 week) - Work experience placement within the finance department. I attended meetings, completed finance related tasks and did a presentation at the end of the week summarising the experience and showing new ideas I had for the company.

October 2016 to May 2017: Bolton School Boys’ Division - Mentored two year 10 students to prepare them for year 11 and eventually their GCSEs.

June 2016: BAE Systems (1 week) - Successfully applied to a week-long work experience course where I participated in team-building and leadership exercises to design and produce a solution to a series of challenges. Presented solutions to the Executive Management Board.

From completing the above roles, I have gained valuable insight into the world of employment and gained communication, teamwork, and learned to interact with a wide range of people.

Awards/Achievements:

Mathematics - Gold prize in British Senior Mathematical Challenge 2017 which qualified me for the British Mathematical Olympiad 2017 which placed me in the top 1,000 students out of over 110,000 students.

First-aid: Completed the NCS first-aid course and have used the knowledge to assist children and adults.

Music: Trinity College London Grade 6 Classical Guitar - Member of a guitar group and lead a guitar quartet. Played at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Victoria Hall, Bolton and many school performances including solo and group performances. This has allowed me to be comfortable with performing and presenting in front of large audiences.

Duke of Edinburgh Silver - Involved a 3-day, 2-night expedition, 6-month periods of physical, skills and volunteering activities. This has developed my resilience, teamwork and leadership skills.

National Citizenship Service - 3-week course involving group outdoor activities, living for a week independently in university halls of residence and over 30 hours of voluntary work. This gave me the opportunity to develop a wide variety of skills including teamwork and communication.

Really helped me with my AS Maths exam - wouldn’t have got any marks without him!! Helped me gain confidence in my maths ability and work through areas I struggled with a friendly and positive attitude. Would definitely recommend Shivam to anyone wishing to improve their maths ability!
