About the lesson
My name is Matthew and I am a graduate of Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where I attained a first class (honours) degree in 2020. I am now taking a part-time Master's in Psychology of Music and the University of Sheffield. I am an energetic, positive and engaging individual who loves to both teach and play Violin and Viola.
Here is what one of my typical lessons would look like:
Introduction - physical warm-up, technical work and studies
30 mins - pieces and becoming building a deep level of musical understanding, including performance practice and preparation
Conclusion - demonstrating practice and what to look for in your practice for the week ahead
I am a very patient and engaging teacher. Learning an instrument takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but with this patience is key from both student and teacher! I am a firm believer that the learning of an instrument can develop so many elements of an individuals life, often not even related to music at all! I expect my students to work hard with me, but also I am very relaxed if we have a mutual understanding of what is expected of each other.
I aim to develop within my students a great level of confidence through practice guidance and a daily practice logger. My students learn specifically how to practice so that they can improve between lessons.
I usually like to enter my students for Graded exams at ABRSM or Trinity exam boards, however, if you just want to learn for fun without taking exams, I would be really happy to accommodate this!

I have been a Violin/Viola teacher for 4 years now, teaching levels from complete beginners to Grade 8 level. Outside of teaching, I perform regularly at some of the UK's finest concert halls and have had many fantastic solo opportunities in my time as a student. Over the years, I have mentored 20+ students, some of which have gone on to get distinctions in Graded exams! My students are all hard workers and have the hard work and dedication that I would expect of them, given their sheer talent! It would be really fantastic to meet some new students, and hopefully begin your path on a new journey of self-discovery because trust me, learning an instrument is one of the most self-fulfilling hobbies you can have!
Matthew has taught my son the viola for nearly 2 years, he is an amazing teacher who knows how to inspire and encourage. My son loved his lessons and looked forward to them weekly and made great progressed. He said that Matthew kept the lessons engaging and was friendly and easy to talk to. We would both highly recommend Matthew as a viola teacher
As a teacher in City of Belfast School of Music I knew Matthew as an exemplary, committed student who worked consistently to his best potential before continuing his studies at music college.
Now as a teacher, he asks the best of his students with a ‘can-do’ attitude of self belief in a positive and relaxed learning environment.
My own students, who were preparing for ABRSM Performance Grades ranging from Grades 5 -7 thoroughly enjoyed their masterclasses with him during the Summer and felt Matthew gave them a huge confidence boost.
He is committed to developing his students to develop their full musical potential by gently instilling self belief and focusing on the positive in lessons which are enjoyable and enriching.
I would recommend Matthew most highly as an instrumental teacher and musician, in particular because of his ability to recognise and meet the individual needs of each of his students.
