A patient and understanding teacher, I offer private violin tuition to pupils of all ages and abilities.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach the violin to pupils at all levels, from complete beginner through ABRSM grades 1-8.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a first class MusB (Hons) from the University of Manchester, and I currently hold the Gladys Bratton, Montague Cleeve and TCM Trust Scholarships at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. I am also an orchestral player and play with the Amadeus Orchestra, Shadwell Opera, Orion Symphony Orchestra and Manchester Consort, and have toured around the UK, Europe and China.
- How much do you charge?
£30 per hour lesson. A small extra fee is charged if I am travelling to the student's home.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from my flat in Camberwell, a 3 minute walk from Denmark Hill railway station (with a direct line to Victoria and London Bridge). Lessons can be taught at the pupil's home although this will incur a small additional fee to cover travel costs.
- When are you available?
As a freelance violinist with a flexible schedule I am able to teach during the week and on weekends. If I am unable to teach on a particular day I will be able to make that lesson up later in the week whenever possible. I am also able to teach throughout school holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach students of all ages and abilities, from beginner to Grade 8.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare pupils for ABRSM exams grades 1 - 8 and for scholarship entry exams, however I do not pressure my pupils to take exams as some want to learn the violin for pure enjoyment without the stress of exams.
Frederick is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have over six years teaching experience; starting as a teaching assistant with Margaret Engering, I have developed a supportive and compassionate approach inspired by the Suzuki method. I have organised and run education workshops with the Vaganza new music group in Manchester, as well as working with the London Philharmonic Orchestra Education projects. I am a tutor on the Bournemouth Chamber Music Course and hold a teaching post at the Wanstead Music School.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I am currently CRB checked.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained with Clare Thomson of the Philharmonia, Clare Dixon of the BBC Philharmonic and Hilary Sturt at the Royal College of Music.

Frederick is a great teacher, calm and patient. He takes you step-by-step through the learning and is always encouraging. I started as a beginner and Frederick has inspired me to carry on learning to play the violin.
