Violin Teacher Muir of Ord | Fiddle Teacher Inverness | Dingwall

Methodology

I am a friendly and fun violin teacher who specialises in teaching beginners and youngsters.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the violin and beginner folk fiddle.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a BA Hons degree in Music, when I specialised in classical violin performance and ensemble performance.
I also have Grade 8 violin with distinction.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £26 an hour (£14 for half hour for young students). Lessons booked in blocks of 5 will get a discount to £120 (£65 half hour lessons).
I am happy to to give a consultation first lesson for £15 where we can discuss the lessons and what you are looking for. There is no obligation to continue after this initial meeting. I can also advise on where to get instruments.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from my home in Muir of Ord, so pupils come to me. My flat is 10 minutes walk from the station and bus stop, and there is plenty of parking space.

- When are you available?

I have some availability on weekday evenings.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I specialise in teaching absolute beginners up to intermediate level (Grade 5). I will then advise you on which teachers to move onto locally.
I can teach very young children from age 4 upwards, and am also very happy to teach adult beginners. For young students, up to 11 years old, parents must be present in the lessons too.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I do not teach online.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

If you or your child are keen to start playing the violin, then please get in touch! I am a fun, young, experienced violinist eager to teach and explore the violin with my pupils. Let's try classical, folk, singing with the violin, rock, pop! Mainly, let's have fun and build your confidence. Anyone can learn an instrument, with a bit of practice and a lot of fun!

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I grew up in a classical music family, and have been playing the violin since I was 4 years old. I learnt by the Suzuki method and my mum is a Suzuki violin teacher. I have over 20 year experience of playing in orchestras, quartets and folk ensembles. Since moving to Scotland in 2008, I have played in many folk music sessions and have stretched my knowledge and skills in folk and jazz playing. I currently play at the Velocity Folk Sessions and am attending courses with the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc in Norway. I am new to teaching the violin, but have 5 years experience teaching kids in other subjects. I am now ready to take on some new pupils.

I have a passion for Scandinavian folk fiddle music, and love exploring harmonies and singing whilst playing the fiddle.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have a Disclosure Scotland check dated May 2017. This will be updated regularly, and you can see a copy.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied Suzuki violin with Miriam Morley and then Karina McAlpine in London. At the University of Southampton I studied violin with Caroline Balding for 2 years.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I currently teach two adult ladies who have decided to take up the violin later in life. We are having great fun learning classical and folk tunes.

I taught Luis (5) who had trouble standing still and concentrating. However, after a couple of lessons with me, he was able to focus, listen and play "I'm A Little Monkey" on the violin. After 6 lessons, his mum said his concentration levels were now improving in other parts of his life.

I taught two young sisters (6 and 4) who were both extremely timid. Their voices were so quiet when they spoke, but they played the violins beautifully (but very quietly). We played musical games and I managed to get them to laugh a lot. We worked on being proud and confident in what you play, even if you might go wrong. After a few lessons, each of the sisters was able to play a violin tune to me, whilst I stood on the opposite side of a big courtyard. Their confidence grew in so many ways.
