I am a friendly and fun violin teacher who specialises in teaching both classical and folk for beginners and intermediate children and adult learners.
I teach the violin and beginner folk fiddle.
I have a BA Hons degree in Music, in which I specialised in classical violin performance and ensemble performance.
I also have Grade 8 violin with distinction.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £28 an hour - I teach young students for half an hour, and adult pupils for 45mins, and the cost is adjusted accordingly. Lessons booked in blocks of 5 get a discount.
I always suggest coming for a consultation first lesson for £15 where we can discuss how I teach, and you can get a taster. There is no obligation to continue after this initial meeting. I can also advise on where to get a violin if you don't already have one.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from my home in Inverness, so pupils come to me. My house has plenty of parking available on the road outside (not metered). I am about a 20min walk from the city centre.
- When are you available?
I teach on Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesdays. Lessons are once a week.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I specialise in teaching absolute beginners up to intermediate level (Grade 5). I will then advise you on which teachers to move onto locally.
I can teach very young children from age 4 upwards, and am also very happy to teach adult beginners. For young students, up to 12 years old, parents must be present in the lessons too.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I will consider teaching online, but it is best to start learning face to face.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
If you or your child are keen to start playing the violin, then please get in touch! I am a fun, young, experienced violinist eager to teach and explore the violin with my pupils. Let's try classical, folk, singing with the violin, rock, pop! Mainly, let's have fun and build your confidence. Anyone can learn an instrument, with a bit of practice and a lot of fun!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I grew up in a classical music family, and have been playing the violin since I was 4 years old. I learnt by the Suzuki method and my mum is a Suzuki violin teacher. I have over 20 year experience of playing in orchestras, quartets and folk ensembles. Since moving to Scotland in 2008, I have played in many folk music sessions and have stretched my knowledge and skills in folk and jazz playing. I currently play at the Velocity Folk Sessions and am attending courses with the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc in Norway. I am been teaching adult and young pupils for 2 years now, and love it.
I have a passion for Scandinavian folk fiddle music, and love exploring harmonies and singing whilst playing the fiddle.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a Disclosure Scotland check dated May 2017.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied Suzuki violin with Miriam Morley and then Karina McAlpine in London. At the University of Southampton I studied violin with Caroline Balding for 2 years. For the last two years I have attended training courses with the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc in Norway and Sweden.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I currently teach two adult ladies who have decided to take up the violin later in life. We are having great fun learning classical and folk tunes.
I have been teaching Isla (9) for 2 years now, and she is making great progress. We are having great fun learning Suzuki and folk tunes and general musicianship too. She's learning fast!
