About the lesson
I'm a London based violinist performing solo, chamber and orchestral music around Europe. Orchestras I have worked with recently include London Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra. I have many years of experience teaching students privately of all ages and abilities. I approach every student individually, attempting to inspire and motivate them to flourish in their studies.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Classical violin, chamber music, aural studies and general music.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Masters of Performance and Artist Diploma degree from the Royal College of Music where I was studying with Prof. Radu Blidar and previous to that I completed my undergraduate studies (BMus Hons) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying with Prof. Krzysztof Smietana.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £60 for a 60 minute lesson. But please feel free to get in touch to discuss that.
- Where do you teach?
I am based in East London, a 8 minute walk from Canning Town tube station. I mostly teach from home but sometimes travel to my students homes when necessary. Another area that I am very active is around St Johns Wood to West Hampstead.
- When are you available?
I am quite flexible with my schedule, l aim to have regular weekly times for each student but would always try to be accommodating if a change of time is needed.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages and all levels. My youngest student currently is 4 and a half years old but I am also teaching a some adults.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am happy to prepare my students for all exams although I have most experience with ABRSM. I am also ready to support and help with school music curriculums. I often like to combine an exam syllabus with some extra materials to cover a well rounded repertoire.
When not working towards an exam or a concert, I approach things a bit differently; I can work more specifically to strengthen key elements in the student's playing, while still aiming for a high quality of focus. I try to set shorter term goals to help achieve this.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I would always recommend in person lessons over online lessons if possible. If not possible in person, my online lessons usually take place via Zoom or Skype. For younger students I would recommend shorter lessons but more often in the online scenario.

About Marike
- What kind of experience do you have?
I've taught students from their very first notes on the violin and I've also had students coming to me from other teachers at various different levels of playing. I have been preparing my students for ABRSM exams where they have achieved great results and I also have experience to bridge Suzuki method students over to music reading. I only teach privately to be flexible with my performing career.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I do, I also have a portable DBS.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I moved to London from Estonia in 2013 to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for my Bachelor studies and after that at the Royal College of Music for my Masters studies. I've studied with several teachers such as Krzysztof Smietana, Radu Blidar and Mari Tampere-Bezrodny. I have been trained to a mixture of Russian and French school of violin technique.
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of Marike.
Perfect! Marika taught my daughter violin. At the beginning she persistently corrected the posture of my daughter until it is perfect, but without making it feel tedious or boring at all. She took my daughter’s progress very seriously, planing well before each class and giving me notes of what needs to be practiced. Her passion towards teaching has brought out my daughter’s interest towards violin. Her class is fun and she is able to explain music to children in a way that they can understand easily. I would highly recommend Marika to anyone looking to learn violin!
Perfect! First lesson was great, got back my interest in playing violin again.
Perfect! Marike is very kind and knowledgeable.

I started taking violin classes with Marike a year ago. I didn't expect to love it so much and I think it's in a big part thanks to her.
It's not easy to start an instrument when you're an adult (much less the violin) and I would probably have given up in less than a month by myself but the classes with Marike are always light and interesting while at the same time going through so much content in just one hour. Most of the time I don't feel like an hour has passed and I want to play more after the class just to practice everything she teaches.
I can now actually play a lot of things that sound very difficult. My family and friends are really impressed :)
Marike is my daughters violin tutor. She is very dedicated in what she does which is shown through her remarkable teaching skills which has enabled my daughter to pass her exams with merit/distinction. She has my full trust and I would highly recommend her to anyone out there who is looking for a strong passionate violin tutor.
I can certainly recommend Marike
She has been teaching my son now for a few months and she has given him so much enthusiasm for his violin. He now practices regularly (well quite regularly!) and has joined an orchestra.
He’s now making such great progress and it’s really all due to Marike. I can thoroughly recommend her, and she’s such a pleasure to deal with tooI’ve worked alongside Marike in group sessions with kids and was very struck by her unwavering positivity. She is an insightful and sensitive teacher while also having a knack of helping kids focus without needing to resort to negativity or harsh discipline. I strongly recommend you drop her a line!
