- Do you have a personal message for students?
I think it is important for learning to be fun and enjoyable. This is the key to self-motivation. I like to create attainable short term goals so that students know what is expected and so that they can look back and see the progress for themselves. I think that a solid technical foundation is vital so I am quick to identify and remedy these kinds of issues. I focus on musical expression and how to achieve it – after all, expression is what music is all about. I am particularly keen to cover performance techniques and how to handle nerves, which are important transferrable skills.
If you have any queries, I am only too glad to have a chat.
- What kind of experience do you have?
My teaching experience:
I first started teaching privately in Essex when I was 18 and taught for a London authority in 5 schools near Penge. I had a teaching job with the Bexley Music College when I was in my thirties and have taught at the Blackheath Conservatoire. I have had private students on and off since leaving college in 1988 and I have taught at the Royal Academy of Music, the Dartington International Music Festival and for the Brentwood Youth Orchestra.
My performance experience:
At the age of 18 I won a national chamber music competition. For about 15 years I was the performer and manager of the Kreisler String Orchestra performing in tours throughout Europe, Russia and Iceland. We made three recordings: our Shostakovich was selected by BBC Radio 3 as the best in a field of 15 other recordings. I have played on the front desk of orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, Scottish Chamber, English Chamber, London Mozart Players, Orchestra of St Johns Smith Square, City of London Sinfonia, English Touring Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, London Children's Ballet to name a few. I have made one solo album of Bach's unaccompanied sonatas and partitas (see attached audio file). I have recorded with Blur, Sting, Youssou N'Dour, Beverly Knight, Bootleg Beetles and performed extensively on the West End stage
