My teaching philosophy is that every student learns differently and has different needs. This is why I don't believe in a one size fits all teaching method. I asses each student and create a lesson plan based on their needs and the subject matter being taught. I have found from my years of teaching that this methodology is what works best. I use a wide array of methods, from lecturing, open discussion, presentations, flash cards, documentaries, word association games and many more. Our first meeting is used to assess what the student’s strengths and weaknesses are, what type of support they need and how they learn best. I then create a lesson plan suited to them and am always open to adjusting it when necessary. Teaching is also about listening and I ask for feedback from each student in order to ensure they are getting the most out of each session.
I have been teaching for 12 years and as an undergraduate I worked part time as a tutor for local high school students. I also worked for 2 years as a college advisor in a high school where I focused on essay writing assistance, monitored students’ grades and tutored students in English, History and Social Science courses. In addition to my academic teaching and tutoring I have planned and taught many workshops focused on community and social justice issues. Currently, I teach a Gender Studies course at Hunter College in the Psychology Department. I have experience teaching at every age level from Primary School through College and am able to provide tutoring for all primary school subjects as well as history, English and social science classes at other levels. I can also provide writing support for all age levels. Most students see results immediately in terms of increased comprehension of the subject matter. In terms of grades I have had many students who see their results go up an entire letter grade as well as students who have gone on to pursue higher education very successfully.
Rates can vary based on travel time. For any travel of an hour or more I charge an additional $20.
I am a Doctoral Candidate in the Critical Social Psychology program at the Graduate Center where I am the recipient of both the GC Doctoral Fellowship and The Provosts Award. I also hold an MPA from The New School where I received the Milano Scholarship. My undergraduate concentrations were Political Science, Sociology and African American History, where I was a member of the Honors Society.
