I am a very experienced teacher and mother of four, now grown up children. My passion is to teach children how to learn, rather than just what to learn.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I offer tuition in English; reading, writing and spelling (including phonics, touch-typing and handwriting where necessary), Mathematics; Number (including times tables), Algebra, Handling Data, Shape, Space and Measures, History, Geography and Religious Education (Philosophy and Ethics); according to Examination Board and/or Key Stage and National Curriculum levels. I also offer tuition in preparation for the 11+ examination.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a fully qualified secondary school teacher: B.Th. (Hons) degree at Southampton University 2000; P.G.C.E in 2001 at the University of Roehampton. In 2008 I completed the 'Leading from the Middle' leading teachers course.
- How much do you charge?
The cost per student per tutorial (55 minutes tuition and 5 minutes for feedback) is currently £27.00. I do not charge any extra for materials, certificates, etc. The initial commitment is for one term. (Between 10 and 14 weeks)
- Where do you teach?
I have a dedicated room in my own home that is well equipped to meet the needs of my pupils. We are based in Sturminster Marshall, but Wimborne, Corfe Mullen, Lytchett Minster, Lytchett Matravers, Broadstone, Blandford, Poole, Canford Heath, Creekmoor, Upton etc., are all within easy reach by car.
- When are you available?
I teach during our local school's term time. Hours are mostly from 3.30 - 4.30, 4.30 - 5.30, and 5.30 - 6.30 every afternoon, Monday to Friday. Adults may prefer later sessions and children home schooled may prefer daytime sessions. Occasionally, if required I teach in the school holidays too.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I am a qualified secondary trained school teacher; however, I'm happy to teach all school aged children. I usually teach children who are not reaching their full potential. Some are quite gifted but might be not functioning as such.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching professionally for the last 16 years, but have been working with babies, children and teenagers all my adult life. I have run a youth group, mother and toddler group and even a Beaver pack. I also have lots of experience helping trainee teachers both whilst working in school and since by helping trainees to pass their QTS tests and offering advice and a listening ear to student teachers during P.G.C.E. and N.Q.T. years. I now provide individual private tuition that is National Curriculum linked; IT-based and above all else fun. Many of my students have /have had special educational needs and disabilities. Some of my pupils will need help with posture, balance and co-ordination. Some pupils will need guidance and help with behavioural issues related to ADHD or auditory or visual challenges in order to access learning more effectively. I am happy to co-ordinate with my student's school SEN(D) Coordinator where necessary.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a Enhanced Disclosure CRB certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
In the UK as above.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Yes, I'm a member of the NASUWT (The Teacher's Union) and a member of The National Handwriting Association.
