Welcome to my webpage! Unlike many other tutors, I only teach my specialist subject, History, so you can rest assured that I will be able to bring very focused skills to bear on helping you or your son/daughter with their work.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach History to all ages from 11 onwards. I can also advise on all aspects of Oxbridge applications and provide help with preparation and practice.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a History degree from Oxford University and also did my Master's and Doctorate there. I have published numerous academic articles in peer-reviewed journals. Much of my research was on Britain in the nineteenth century.
- How much do you charge?
A guide to my fees is set out at the top of this page - my standard rate is £40 for a one-hour tutorial.
- Where do you teach?
I mainly teach at my home in Kingston Upon Thames but am happy to travel up to 5 miles. My students come from across South West London and Surrey.
- When are you available?
I work part-time as a private tutor; please contact me to fix up a convenient time and date.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
11 to Adult, though most of my work is with sixth formers.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I am happy to comment on written work by email and have recently started to give 1-hour tutorials via Skype.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
My approach to tutoring is to develop a positive working relationship with a student and then to address four key areas (the emphasis given to an area will depend on your strengths or those of your son or daughter):
1) Motivation & Study Skills
2) Subject Knowledge
3) Essay-Writing Skills
4) Exam Technique
Please do contact me for further info. and I'll do my best to help. I'm happy to email you a detailed CV and confidential references.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I taught History for three years as lecturer in History at various Oxford colleges (St Hugh's, Keble, Wadham, and Christ Church). At A Level I have experience of teaching a wide range of modern and early modern papers. As a result of my university experience I am also very well-placed to help candidates preparing for Oxbridge entrance.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Almost all of my students are sixth-formers taking AS or A2 exams; a number are also doing retakes. I have a very good record of helping students to improve their grades: in the Easter retakes one of my AS students moved from a D to a B and another improved their grade from a B to an extremely high A (100%!).
