I start off by gauging the exposure of the student with the current topic of learning, along with the prior concepts which might be needed in the course of the same. I also try to include any real life applications of the same and/or interesting trivia surrounding the subject matter. Post the topic is covered, I usually ask the student to explain the same to me, or any other relative who may or may not any prior knowledge of the topic, thereby testing the understanding prior to taking any 'scary' tests.
