Tom has been working with 13-14 years old young people and he has demonstrate an incredible ability to talk and listen to them. He has been able to work on a class, teaching them topics related with transition, such as challenges and opportunities high school provides. 28 year old University of Edinburgh History Graduate willing to tutor from primary to undergraduate level.

Methodology

Hello there. My name is Tom Draper and i am a recent graduate from Edinburgh University looking to pass on my expertise in the subject. If you are simply looking for a bit of help with a primary school project, to help with high school exams, or maybe some advice and pointers in that undergraduate course that is simply baffling you then I am happy to help.

I am a very calm, patient and good humored guy. The feeling of getting someone engaged in the subject i have a passion for and seeing a student develop is a great reward.

I tend to start with a personal approach asking the student what they struggle with, Whether thats writing style, analytical interpretation, or a problem with remembering dates and facts.

Then I like to work through with case examples from the level they are at and see where the problems lie then we are able to work through there problem and get them the grade or the outcome they want!

Background

In my present professional role as a Social Researcher I often have to do very different tasks on a day-to-day basis. For example research and data analysis both in a qualitative and quantitative capacity. I often have to engage with the public through focus groups and visit various local organisations to share the objectives of the project. The role also requires flexibility and working within a tight schedule.

I have also contributed substantially to the Positive Transitions project; the lottery funded project is to gather first hand evidence of children’s difficulty in acclimatising to High School. I have been gathering data from 1st year students at Portobello High School. The way in which the research was conducted was in a classroom setting, in which two of us would do interactive workshops and lessons to around thirty students. The classes were selected as having students who had discipline issues, and to explore their frustrations. This often noisy atmosphere was one I thrived in and I received praise from my colleagues, teachers and even students in terms of feedback forms saying I was the best thing about the classes on some occasions. In order to do this work I am covered by the PVG scheme.

I have had many emails from staff and students complimenting my patience and warmth i show to all students of all levels.

Work Experience

Project Scotland June 2016 – ongoing

I am currently working on a project conducting social research on the impact of package holidays to Spain on the mindset of ordinary Scots. In this role I am creating surveys, focus groups and liaising with local businesses to collect data in order to explore other complex issues such as racial prejudice and cultural impact on both communities.

I have also participated in another project within the charity called Positive Transitions, which centres on collecting data from S1 children just starting High School. I have run workshops with classes of children during school hours, conducting various group tasks both written and interactive to document their accounts of becoming a high school student. The eventual aim of this is to formulating a report which could be published to create awareness of the struggles that young people face at what can be a difficult time.

Royal Bank of Scotland – November 2015 to May 2016

I was employed by the Royal Bank of Scotland as part of the Specialist Support Team in the Client Money Service Department. I am responsible for investigating and resolving client transaction queries.

Central Taxis- May 2014 -September 2014

In the summer of 2014, I worked in the control room of Central Taxis. I was responsible for booking taxis not only for individuals but also for prominent businesses. In this role I had to work hard in a
team environment. I thrived in this very busy setting and was able to execute my job to a high standard.

Photographer’s Assistant – May 2012 onwards

In this post I undertake a range of duties assisting the photographer to complete his brief. These can range from setting up scenes, collecting props and ensuring the necessary equipment is available.

Millets - The Outdoor Store – October 2006- May 2012

From 2006 to 2012 I was employed in Millets, the outdoor sports retailer, as a sales assistant. In this role I gained many useful skills such as cash management, dealing with a wide cross-section of
the public and managing and motivating other members of staff. I was responsible for health and safety training and for overseeing sale preparation procedures.

I also worked in Flora Stevenson Primary School as part of my work experience programme. It was enjoyable and fulfilling working with Primary One. It helped me gain valuable social skills and an understanding of the demands of the work situation.

Interests and Hobbies

I am a keen reader with an eclectic range of interests. I am interested in the cinema having studied both drama and media at school. I am also interested in sport, particularly football and rugby. I am season ticket holder of Edinburgh Rugby and a keen supporter of Heart of Midlothian FC. I played rugby at school level and take part in a five-aside football league. I am also interested in politics and current affairs. I have travelled in Europe, the USA and have also visited Africa.
