About Val

I'm Val, a 20 year old first year student at Cardiff University studying advanced German and beginner Japanese. I've been studying German both in formal education and independently since I was 11 years old, and additionally speak Spanish, beginner Japanese, and very basic Russian. I'm new to formal tutoring, but I've wanted to teach since I was very young, and had the opportunity to work as a volunteer teaching assistant in language classes for a year during my time at sixth form, and assisted younger students with their work one on one throughout my time there, which only affirmed this goal for me. After getting my degree, I'd like to work towards becoming a GCSE and/or A Level foreign language teacher. I offer remote tutoring in German for students who are complete beginners, up to A level standard German. I spent my final year of sixth form working as a volunteer teaching assistant in KS3 and GCSE Spanish + German lessons, totalling up to over 100 hours of experience, as well as having ample experience caring for and working with children unrelated to teaching. I achieved AAA* in my three AQA German A level exams, 9 in AQA GCSE Spanish after only 1 year of study, and recently received an overall 85 in my university's Russian night classes. I was also recently accepted onto my university's Modern Foreign Languages mentoring programme for the next academic year, and am now just waiting for my enhanced DBS certificate.

I believe that a key factor in being able to work better in a foreign language is confidence, and as a result I primarily focus on building this in students. Teaching the grammar and content itself is one matter, but there is no one size fits all to this. It's no secret that learning a new language can be very confusing and takes a lot of effort, but it becomes a lot more understandable when you know how to break it down and what to look for, as well as finding the techniques and approaches that work for you - no two students are the same! In 1 hour sessions, I focus on teaching students how to approach the language independently, with techniques such as recognising word types in a sentence (for example, recognising verbs through conjugation, or nouns through capitalisation) to be able to break it down themselves. I then reinforce this helping students to find methods that work for them to memorise and reproduce the language, whether that's flashcards, mnemonics, reading a book in the language, writing a diary, or something completely different. An initial session would include me getting a grasp on your understanding of the language, whether you know nothing at all or already have some level of experience with it. From here we can determine together what your goals are. If you already know some things, perhaps you're looking to focus on others, and if you're starting from scratch, it gives me context for what direction to build tutoring sessions towards (assisting a course you're already on such as GCSE German, German for travel, German for business, learning purely out of interest, or for any other goal).
