About Alan
Hi. I’m Alan. I have been playing piano for 20 years and am passionate about classical, jazz and world music. But I love hip hop too! Teaching is an extremely rewarding experience and I am dedicated to my students. I have worked as an author of music reviews and content for BBC websites. Being a volunteer for Music In The Round in Sheffield where I help out at gigs by assisting audience and band members is a great way to meet people and hear new music.

I take a student-centred approach informed by their needs and musical interests whilst nurturing a creative engagement with the piano or keyboard. Lessons are planned around the aptitude and age of the learner but I am happy to be flexible on the day based on the needs of the student. Happy to give practical exercises as homework, or not. I do believe that teaching is a continually evolving process and I like to introduce new ideas. I start by recapping previous lessons and any homework and structure the main part of the lesson around pieces. These can be exam pieces, from other sources or just pieces the learner would like to learn to play for fun. I aim to make learning fun by teaching the elements of a piece, from just clapping the rhythm right through to playing the complete piece. Am comfortable explaining music theory too. Lessons typically last 45 minutes. Achieved an ABRSM grade 8 in piano and an undergraduate certificate in music from Sheffield University. Piano teaching one to one to students of all ages at AS Music school in Sheffield. Beginner level. Piano teaching to small groups at a Sunday school. I set up 4 different lesson sessions teaching children aged from 6 to 16. Private piano tuition one to one. Both children and adults. Familiarity with ABRSM piano grades.
