To forget one's ancestors is to be a stream without a source, a tree without roots.
Chinese Proverb
In Western cultures, zodiac predictions or horoscopes — are commonly viewed as light-hearted guidance. In many Asian cultures, however, zodiac systems hold deeper cultural significance and are closely tied to personality traits and life paths. Use our Chinese zodiac calculator to find your animal, then explore its temperament, strengths, and unique benefits.
How to calculate your Chinese Zodiac Sign?
The calculation is simple: identify your birth year in the table above. But be careful! If you were born in January or February, check the exact date of the Chinese New Year (春节, Chūnjié) for your birth year. Since the Chinese calendar is lunisolar, the New Year falls between January 21st and February 20th.
Example: A person born on January 15, 1990, might think they are a Horse (year 1990). However, the Chinese New Year of 1990 fell on January 27. Therefore, they are still a Snake (year 1989).
That’s where the real magic of the Chinese horoscope lies. It’s much more than a fortune-telling system — it’s a fascinating window into Chinese language and culture. Despite common misconceptions, Chinese astrology isn’t just colourful folklore. It’s a sophisticated system that dates back over 2,000 years, grounded in astronomy, the philosophy of yin and yang, and the lunar calendar. For anyone learning Mandarin, understanding the Chinese horoscope means tapping into a fundamental way of thinking in Chinese culture.
Here, we’ll look at the Chinese horoscope not as a mystical guide to your fate, but as a cultural and linguistic lens. You’ll see how the 12 zodiac animals shape everyday conversations, why your Chinese friends can work out your age without asking, and how this ancient tradition can genuinely enhance your Mandarin learning experience.
Understanding the Chinese Horoscope
If you're studying Chinese, you've probably noticed that your Asian classmates love talking about their Chinese zodiac sign. "What animal are you?" is a common question during first encounters, much like "Where are you from?" in the West. But why this almost universal interest?
🧭 A millennia-old system of organisation
Chinese astrology was codified during the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), a period that also saw the invention of paper, the compass, and porcelain. Unlike our Western zodiac, which is based on the annual solar cycle (12 months = 12 signs), the Chinese zodiac operates on a 12-year cycle, with each year associated with an animal.
When a Chinese person asks you your Chinese zodiac sign, they're not trying to predict your future. It's an indirect and polite way of knowing your approximate age! In China, directly asking someone's age can be considered impolite, especially towards women. The zodiac allows you to bypass this awkwardness while also fostering social interaction.
This system is not based on mere divination; it is founded on astronomical observation and the
lunisolar calendar. The Chinese noticed that Jupiter (木星, Mùxīng, "the Wood Star") completes its orbit around the Sun in approximately 12 years. They divided this cycle into 12 sections, each symbolised by a familiar animal.
🎭 A cultural framework, not an inevitability
Note: Studying the Chinese horoscope doesn't mean believing your future is written in the stars. The Chinese themselves have a pragmatic relationship with their astrology. It's more of a shared symbolic language of history and legends behind the Chinese horoscope, a playful way to talk about personality and human relationships.
As anthropologist Marc Kalinowski points out in his research on Chinese divination5:
Astrology in China is not so much a tool for prediction as a system for categorising time and temperaments, intimately linked to the social structure and calendrical rites.
Mark Kalinowski

The Legend of the Great Race 🏁
According to popular legend (传说, chuánshuō), the Jade Emperor (玉皇大帝, Yù Huáng Dàdì), the supreme Taoist deity, organised a race to determine which animals would represent the calendar. The first 12 to cross the celestial river were selected.
The cunning Rat (鼠, shǔ) climbed onto the Ox's (牛, niú) back and jumped at the last moment to cross the line first. This is why the Rat opens the cycle, followed by the Ox. This story, told to Chinese children from generation to generation, explains the order of Chinese characters while conveying moral values: the Rat's intelligence, the Ox's naive generosity, the Dragon's (龙, lóng) power, and so on.
The other animals arrived, singly or in twos and threes. The horse thundered into the Emperor's sight, with Snake wrapped around its leg. The sight of Snake frightened Horse, causing him to fall behind. So, the zodiac reflects the Snake arriving ahead of the Horse.
Sheep, Monkey and Rooster worked together to get across the river. Pleased with their collaborative spirit, the Emperor awarded them their places in that order.
This legend reflects many of the traits that people born under each Chinese zodiac sign embody.
As you read through each animal's description, you'll find echoes of this origin story. Often, they will clash with Western perceptions of these animal traits. For instance, we don't think highly of rats, but the Chinese zodiac finds them clever and resourceful.
The zodiac is one aspect that makes the Chinese New Year special. Far from being something to chuckle over, many cultures take zodiac meanings very seriously. People will go so far as to consult with fortune-tellers for guidance on how to navigate their zodiac animals' bad years.

Finding it difficult to reveal what they think, Rabbits tend to be very cautious, even overly so, which can cause them to miss out on great opportunities.
Rabbits (or Hares) are more likely to pursue careers as teachers, nurses, doctors, police officers, judges, lawyers, or even farmers.
Legend has it that the Jade Emperor delegated the rat the task of summoning all the animals for selection. However, the rat forgot to summon the cat, who became angry. Since then, they have been enemies. And that is why the cat is not included in the Chinese calendar.

Dragons are more likely to pursue careers as journalists, teachers, inventors, lawyers, salespeople, IT analysts, or architects.

Horses can also be a little self-centred, but that doesn't stop them from taking an interest in other people's problems.
If you are a Horse, your life path will lead you to careers such as linguist, translator, manager, director, bartender, bookseller, or journalist.

Several cultures follow this zodiac system, but each has its own variations.
In China, Sheep (Ewe or Ram) prevail, but in Vietnam, the Goat is the eighth animal.
The Sheep Personality
Gentle, kind, well-mannered, and friendly, Goat men and women have a strong sense of kindness and justice. Goats are highly creative, persistent, and have excellent defensive instincts. Although they enjoy being in groups, Goats prefer not to be the centre of attention and remain reserved, spending a lot of time lost in their thoughts.
According to Chinese divination, Goats are drawn to professions such as paediatrician, florist, hairdresser, editor, illustrator, art history teacher, or elementary school teacher.
In 2014, Chinese couples rushed to marry ahead of the upcoming Ram year.
During 2015, China registered record low marriage and birth rates, as couples wanted to avoid an ill-fated marriage and having an Ewe baby.
Full disclosure: I was living in China at the time. The media reported on that phenomenon throughout the year. One of the Chinese New Year's most fascinating aspects is how people will plan their lives, families, and careers around the Chinese zodiac.

The Monkey Personality
Monkeys are intelligent and self-assured, enthusiastic and innovative. If the answer to "what is my Chinese zodiac sign?" is Monkey, you'll find yourself discoursing at length, for Monkeys are eloquent.
Those very traits make Monkeys arrogant and jealous, though. They tend to be impatient and opportunistic, lacking the perseverance to see anything through.
Monkey Compatibility
Anything with lots of variety: entertainer, athlete, or stockbroker. Monkeys are great in 'logical' jobs like programming and detective work.
Best with Rat, Dragon, Snake

Like its animal counterpart, the Dog is loyal, kind, gentle, and would do anything for the person they love. Far from being selfish, the Dog is always ready to help others, forgetting their own interests, which can lead some people to betray them easily.

The lunar constellation of the Chinese annual horoscope advises the Pig to pursue a career as a doctor, veterinarian, interior designer, driver, salesperson, caregiver, or caterer.

🌗 Yin-Yang and the 5 elements: Philosophy of the Horoscope
If you thought the Chinese horoscope was limited to 12 animals, think again! The system is much more subtle and reflects the whole of traditional Chinese cosmology.
years old
While legends speak of the Jade Emperor, history tells a different story: the system was codified during the Han dynasty, combining astronomical observation with the philosophy of yin and yang2. It became a core cultural pillar, often explored in Chinese language classes as a way to better understand the Chinese worldview.
The main difference from Western astrology lies in the time scale. Western astrology is solar — your sign is determined by the month you were born. The Chinese zodiac, by contrast, follows a lunisolar calendar. This means the sign changes once a year at Chinese New Year (in January or February), rather than every month.
⚖️ Yin and Yang: complementary duality
The concept of yin and yang (阴阳, yīn yáng) is central to Chinese philosophy. It isn’t a simple binary opposition (good vs. evil, day vs. night), but a dynamic relationship of complementarity. Yin is associated with the feminine, the moon, cold, and inwardness. Yang, by contrast, represents the masculine, the sun, warmth, and outward expression.
The 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac alternate between yin and yang according to their position in the cycle:
- Yang (奇数, jīshù, “odd numbers”): Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog
- Yin (偶数, ǒushù, “even numbers”): Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, Pig
This alternation is far from symbolic trivia — it structures Chinese ways of thinking. Grasping these ideas helps you better understand traditional Chinese medicine, feng shui, and even military strategy (Sun Tzu draws heavily on yin–yang principles in The Art of War).
In Chinese astrology, the analysis goes well beyond identifying an animal sign. Each sign is also shaped by one of the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — creating a full 60-year cycle. In other words, simply being a “Dragon” isn’t enough: a Fire Dragon and a Water Dragon are interpreted in very different ways, with markedly different personality traits.
The Five Elements and their Influence on the Signs
The Wǔxíng system (五行, "5 phases") adds a fascinating layer of complexity. Each element (元素, yuánsù) corresponds to a planet visible to the naked eye:
| Element | Chinese | Planet | Color | Associated personality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | 木 (mù) | Jupiter (木星) | Green | Ethics, sense of duty, structure |
| Fire | 火 (huǒ) | Mars (火星) | Red | Spontaneity, energy, passion |
| Earth | 土 (tǔ) | Saturn (土星) | Yellow | Concentration, seriousness, stability |
| Metal | 金 (jīn) | Venus (金星) | White | Convictions, resolve, autonomy |
| Water | 水 (shuǐ) | Mercury (水星) | Blue/Black | Calm, creativity, empathy |
Your element is determined by the last digit of your birth year:
Year ending in 4 or 5
Wood 🪵
Year ending in 6 or 7
Fire 🔥
Year ending in 8 or 9
Earth 🌍
Year ending in 0 or 1
Metal ⚙️
Year ending in 2 or 3
Water 💧
A concrete example: Were you born in 1997? You are a Fire Ox (火牛, Huǒ Niú). This animal + element combination creates a 60-year cycle (12 animals × 5 elements = 60 unique combinations). This is why the Chinese celebrate their 60th birthday with great fanfare: it's a return to the cosmic starting point!

The Chinese Horoscope in Everyday Life
Now that you know the theoretical basics, let's see how the Chinese horoscope enters into everyday conversations in China.
💬 Breaking the ice with a stranger
Imagine: you meet a Chinese person at a language exchange event in Shanghai. After the usual greetings (你好 nǐ hǎo), your interlocutor asks you: "你属什么?" (Nǐ shǔ shénme?, "What animal are you?"). This seemingly innocuous question serves several social functions:
- To know your approximate age without being indiscreet
- Create a bond by finding common ground ("Ah, my sister is a Rabbit too!")
- Test your level of Chinese culture (if you know your zodiac sign, you're already somewhat integrated)
Answering correctly shows that you are not just learning characters: you are genuinely interested in Chinese culture.
🎊 Chinese New Year: a giant astrological festival
Every year, between January and February, China pauses for seven days to celebrate the Spring Festival (Chūnjié). This period, also known as the Chinese New Year, marks the transition to a new zodiac animal.
2026 will be the year of the Fire Horse (火马, Huǒ Mǎ), beginning on February 17, 2026. The Chinese then consult annual horoscopes en masse to find out if their animal will be "favoured" or should exercise caution.
It is often even a delicate period (犯太岁, fàn tàisuì, "to offend the Tai Sui")
People born in the Year of the Horse will therefore have to wear red underwear in 2026 to ward off bad luck (a fun and widely followed tradition!).
If you’re studying in China or Taiwan, taking part in Chinese New Year celebrations is an invaluable language-learning experience. You’ll pick up dozens of idiomatic expressions (chéngyǔ, 成语) linked to the animal of the year, understand cultural references in everyday conversations, and create truly authentic memories. That’s what real immersion is all about.
Romantic Compatibility in the Chinese Zodiac
In the West, people often wonder whether a Leo can live happily with a Scorpio. In China, romantic compatibility is a far more serious matter, deeply rooted in social tradition. In the past, before a marriage, families would exchange the “Eight Characters” (bāzì) of the future bride and groom to assess whether the union would bring prosperity to the clan3.
Rather than delivering a fixed or fatalistic verdict, Chinese astrology is based on the interaction of energies. It groups the 12 zodiac animals into four distinct sets known as compatibility triangles. Signs within the same triangle share similar values and ways of relating to the world.
| Triangle | Compatible Animals | Shared Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| The Leaders | Rat 🐀 / Dragon 🐉 / Monkey 🐒 | Ambition, intelligence, action |
| The Protectors | Ox 🐂 / Snake 🐍 / Rooster 🐓 | Reflection, stability, dedication |
| The Independents | Tiger 🐅 / Horse 🐎 / Dog 🐕 | Courage, loyalty, idealism |
| The Diplomats | Rabbit 🐇 / Goat 🐐 / Pig 🐖 | Kindness, creativity, peace |
By contrast, each sign also has its “arch-enemy,” usually positioned directly opposite it on the zodiac wheel (six years apart). This pairing is often tense, as the two temperaments clash head-on. The most famous example is the rivalry between the Rat (thrifty and calculating) and the Horse (free-spirited and spendthrift). Other well-known frictions include the Tiger struggling with the Monkey’s trickery, or the Rabbit being unsettled by the Rooster’s aggressiveness.
Chinese astrology is subtle: the influence of the five elements (Fire, Water, Earth, Wood, and Metal) can soften potential clashes. In fact, a Chinese culture class with a private tutor can help you understand how to harmonise these opposing energies — through feng shui, for example, or simply by gaining a deeper understanding of each other4.
The Chinese Horoscope
Who said Asian astrology couldn't be fun?

Chinese legends about the signs of the zodiac are common and well-developed, which explains why so many young Chinese people know the legends of Asian astrology by heart.
The story goes that the generous Ox agreed to carry the Rat on its horns. The race ended with a river crossing, and the Rat supposedly beat the Ox to the bank, thus becoming the first sign of the Chinese zodiac. These stories form the basis for the placement of the Chinese zodiac signs in the Asian calendar.
Legends are not just for children! At university, for example, students sometimes give their zodiac sign instead of their age, which leads to a game among newcomers. But it doesn't stop there: students sometimes tend to group themselves into certain social groups, knowing full well that a Goat will get along better with a Pig than with a Snake, for example.
For some families, the Chinese horoscope remains a daily ritual: parents and children can consult their annual horoscope and take stock of their friendly or romantic affinities, often proving to be in line with the assumptions of the horoscope.
This certainly doesn't mean that a Rooster and a Rabbit can't have a romantic relationship. In fact, the horoscope has a more positive outlook, encouraging personal growth and the pursuit of professional goals.
The Chinese Ascendant: Twelve Astrological Signs Per Day
In astrology, the ascendant is one of the elements that make up the birth chart. It is calculated using the time and place of the person's birth.

To calculate your Chinese ascendant, which is the astrological sign associated with your time of birth, you will need to:
- Born between 1945 and 1976: subtract one hour regardless of the season.
- Born from 1976 to the present day: subtract two hours for people born at the time of summer time and 1 hour at the time of winter time.
Next, add 8 hours to the result obtained, and see which sign our time corresponds to:
11pm-1 AM
Rat 🐀
1-3 AM
Buffalo 🐂
3-5 AM
Tiger 🐅
5-7 AM
Hare 🐇
7-9 AM
Dragon 🐲
9-11 AM
Snake 🐍
11 AM - 1 PM
Horse 🐎
1-3 PM
Sheep 🐑
3-5 PM
Monkey 🐒
5-7 PM
Rooster 🐓
7-9 PM
Dog 🐕
9-11 PM
Pig 🐖
If you were born at 1:50 on January 23, 1971: first subtract 1 hour (birth between 1945 and 1976 at the time of winter time) then add 8 hours, which gives 8:50: therefore, a dog rising dragon.
You are an Ox with a Rabbit ascendant if you are born on November 2, 1985, at 9 a.m.: you are patient and persevering, faithful in love, courageous, honest and determined, and you bring all your projects to completion.
While your sun sign (based on your birth year) represents your "outward appearance" or how society perceives you, your rising sign (based on your birth time) reveals your inner personality. It's your "travelling companion" that gains importance with maturity.
The ascendant can either reinforce the traits of your main sign, soften them, or create a fascinating paradox. Here are 3 examples of combinations to understand this celestial dynamic:
🐲 The Dragon Rising Monkey (Strengthening):
- The mix: The Dragon is charismatic and ambitious. The Monkey (3 pm-5 pm) is clever and inventive.
- The result: An explosive and brilliant personality. The Monkey ascendant gives the Dragon the cunning it sometimes lacks. It's a born leader profile, capable of succeeding at everything it undertakes, but potentially unscrupulous. It's the "Super Dragon" of the zodiac.
🐅 The Tiger Rising Rabbit (Softening):
- The mix: The Tiger is impetuous, courageous, and sometimes aggressive. The Rabbit (5-7 am) is diplomatic, cautious, and a homebody.
- The result: A Velvet Tiger. This ascendant calms the wild beast's ardour. This is a person who thinks before they act. Unlike the classic Tiger who charges headlong, this one uses the Rabbit's diplomacy to get what they want without bloodshed.
🐂 The Ox Ascendant Horse (Contrast):
- The mix: The Ox is slow, methodical, and likes routine. The Horse (11 am-1 pm) is free, fast, and unpredictable.
- The result: A hyperactive Ox. This is a complex personality, torn between the need for security and the desire for adventure. This ascendant makes the Ox much more sociable and open to travel, breaking their usual austere image.
📅 A lunisolar calendar: Unlike Western astrology, which changes every month, the Chinese zodiac sign changes every year (12-year cycle) during the Chinese New Year (between January and February).
🧩 A 3-dimensional personality: Your complete profile isn't just an animal. It consists of your Annual Sign (your social image), your Element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water – which influences your character), and your Ascendant (linked to your birth time – your inner self).
💞 Compatibility: Chinese astrology is a powerful tool for understanding human relationships. It works through "compatibility triangles" and antagonisms.
Learning Chinese Through the Horoscope: A Fun, Engaging Method
Chinese legends surrounding the zodiac signs are widespread and deeply rooted, which explains why so many young Chinese people know Asian astrology inside out. As you’ve probably guessed, the Chinese horoscope isn’t just quaint folklore. It’s a powerful learning resource for improving your Mandarin. Here are some helpful tips on how to use it effectively.
Strategy 1: Memorise the 12 Zodiac Animal Characters
The 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac are core characters that every learner needs to know. Instead of mindlessly memorising them from a textbook, link them to real people you know:
- 鼠 (shǔ, Rat) → your friend born in 1996, 2008, or 2020
- 牛 (niú, Ox) → your teacher born in 1997 or 2009
- 虎 (hǔ, Tiger) → your sister born in 1998 or 2010
After just a few weeks of natural practice (asking people what their sign is), these 12 characters will be firmly stored in your long-term memory.
Bonus: you’ll also learn the verb 属 (shǔ, “to belong to”), which is essential in everyday conversation.
Strategy 2: Practise Numbers and Dates
Working out your Chinese zodiac sign forces you to handle years in Chinese (一九九七年, yī jiǔ jiǔ qī nián = 1997). It’s an excellent way to practise numbers, a skill many beginners overlook.
Talking about the lunar calendar also introduces rich time-related vocabulary:
- 农历 (nónglì, lunar/agricultural calendar)
- 公历 (gōnglì, Gregorian calendar)
- 初一 (chūyī, first day of the lunar month), etc.
Strategy 3: Read Horoscope Articles in Chinese
Chinese astrology websites (星座网, xīngzuò wǎng) publish daily horoscopes written in simple language—ideal for intermediate learners (HSK 3–4). You’ll come across vocabulary related to:
- Emotions: 开心 (kāixīn, happy), 焦虑 (jiāolǜ, anxious), 平静 (píngjìng, calm)
- Work: 事业 (shìyè, career), 升职 (shēngzhí, promotion), 同事 (tóngshì, colleague)
- Love: 恋爱 (liàn’ài, to fall in love), 分手 (fēnshǒu, break-up), 婚姻 (hūnyīn, marriage)
Reading your “Dragon” or “Rabbit” horoscope for just five minutes a day will help you improve without feeling like you’re studying. It’s real, effortless immersion.
Create a WeChat group with your Chinese classmates where everyone shares their daily horoscopes in Chinese. You’ll be exposed to all 12 sets of vocabulary, practise reading comprehension, and never run out of conversation topics. It’s a highly effective way to help students progress quickly.
Beyond Astrology: A Window into the Chinese Mindset
Studying the Chinese horoscope ultimately means understanding how Chinese culture views time, relationships, and cosmic harmony.
A Cyclical View of Time
Unlike the Western, linear view of time (past → present → future), Chinese thought emphasises cycles. The 12-year zodiac cycle, combined with the five elements, creates a 60-year cycle that repeats endlessly. This worldview influences everything—from traditional architecture (siheyuan courtyard houses) to military strategy.
As French sociologist Marcel Granet wrote in Chinese Thought (1934): “The Chinese do not see time as an arrow, but as a spiral. Each return is different, yet the patterns repeat.”
The Importance of Relationships (关系, guānxi)
The zodiac’s system of romantic and social compatibility reflects the Chinese emphasis on 关系 (guānxi, relationships and networks). In a collectivist society, knowing who you’ll naturally get along with matters. Chinese astrology provides a reassuring framework for navigating complex social interactions.
That’s why Chinese people almost always ask for your zodiac sign—it’s not superstition, it’s social engineering.
A Common Cultural Touchstone
The 12 zodiac animals are woven into popular culture: cartoons (Kung Fu Panda), New Year stamps, festive decorations, tattoos, and more. Recognising these symbols helps you decode countless cultural references.
For example, 2024 was the Year of the Wood Dragon (甲辰龙年, Jiǎchén lóng nián). As the most prestigious animal (a symbol of imperial power), the Dragon triggered a surge in births that year. Millions of parents planned for “Dragon babies” to give their children a more favourable horoscope. Fascinating sociologically, isn’t it?
Conclusion: The Chinese Horoscope as a Cultural Passport
We’ve reached the end of this journey into the Chinese horoscope. You now know that behind every Rat, Dragon, or Pig lies a sophisticated system combining astronomy, Yin–Yang philosophy, and the lunar calendar.
More importantly, you’ve seen that Chinese astrology isn’t an esoteric belief system to accept or reject. It’s a shared cultural language, a playful way of understanding personality, and an outstanding immersion tool for anyone learning Mandarin.
So the next time someone asks you, “你属什么” (Nǐ shǔ shénme? — What’s your Chinese zodiac sign?), you won’t hesitate. You’ll smile, proudly name your animal in Chinese (我属虎, wǒ shǔ hǔ — “I’m a Tiger”), and spark a genuine cultural conversation.
Because in the end, mastering the Chinese horoscope gives you a valuable key—the one that opens doors to intercultural friendship and mutual understanding. And that’s something no grammar book can ever teach you.
