About Peter

With over 30 years of teaching experience working in several departments as Key Stage Coordinator and Head of Department I am now accepting a small number of students who may require extra help due to lockdown or may feel that they are falling behind in progress, or suffering from poor motivation and low self-esteem. I have studied mathematics education at Masters Level and have undertaken extensive research and writing on international teaching methods such as Singapore Maths and bar modelling methodologies.

When required I will provide free support to students outside of sessions using e-mail and Zoom. My aim is to get students to where they should be and help them reach their full potential. I do this through one-to-one online sessions, after a free 30 minute online consultation. I use a wide range of the latest resources including screen sharing, online puzzles and games and instructional videos. I use interactive resources and a writing tablet with an online whiteboard. I have extensive knowledge of Mathematics education and have researched the latest global Maths instruction methodologies during my MSc in Mathematics in Education. This means that I am prepared to incorporate instruction such as Bar Modelling as used in the Singapore Mathematics instruction. I will need to know if there are specific areas of Maths that I can help with and I will provide a detailed and regular report to parents/ carers. I will plan specific, targeted intervention that will aim to allow rapid progress and build confidence. Because of my extensive knowledge of the school curriculum I am able to provide accurate, knowledge-based assessment and monitor the progress of your child. Please feel free to contact me to see if I have any vacancies for your child. At the moment I am unable to take on any more A Level students but have space for a limited number of KS2, KS3 and GCSE students.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in Maths and teaching from a young age. The logical structure and problem-solving aspects of Maths fascinated me. My passion for private tutoring emerged when I realized how individualized attention could significantly boost a student's understanding and confidence. Seeing the positive impact I could have on students' academic journeys motivated me to pursue tutoring alongside my formal education.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialize in teaching Maths up to A Level. I enjoy discussing a wide range of topics within Maths, particularly problem-solving strategies and algebra, which I find are crucial for developing analytical skills. I also have a strong interest in international strategies like Singapore Maths. While I enjoy most topics, I find some of the more abstract theoretical concepts can be challenging to make engaging for all students, but I always strive to present them in a relatable way.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I had a Maths teacher in secondary school who truly inspired me. Their enthusiasm for the subject and ability to make complex concepts understandable sparked my interest in Maths and teaching. Their supportive and encouraging approach made a significant impact on my educational path and career choice.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs to be patient, adaptable, and empathetic. It's important to understand each student's unique needs and learning style. Strong communication skills are essential to explain concepts clearly and effectively. A good tutor should also be passionate about the subject and committed to continuous learning to stay updated with the latest teaching methods and curriculum changes. Lastly, fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment is crucial for student success.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my teaching career, I have received numerous positive comments from students who have enjoyed having me as a teacher and learned so much. One memorable moment was when a parent contacted the school to let the headteacher know how much their child had gained from being in my class. This student had struggled with Maths but, after our sessions, showed remarkable improvement and even developed a newfound confidence in their abilities. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of personalized teaching and its impact.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the challenges I face is addressing the varying confidence levels among students. Maths can be intimidating for many, and helping students overcome their fear and build self-confidence is a continuous effort. Additionally, staying updated with the latest teaching methods and curriculum changes requires ongoing research and adaptation. However, these challenges are also opportunities for growth and improvement, both for my students and myself.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My particular passion lies in teaching and making a positive impact on students' lives. I am passionate about using interactive and dynamic teaching methods to engage students and make learning enjoyable. Beyond teaching, I have a keen interest in educational research and continuously exploring new strategies to improve my teaching practice. I am also fascinated by how different cultures approach Maths education, such as the methods used in Singapore Maths.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

Students should choose me as their tutor because I am passionate about teaching and committed to helping students achieve their full potential. I have over 30 years of experience in education, with roles including Key Stage Coordinator and Head of Department. I have a BA Hons in Finance, a PGCE in secondary teaching, and an MSc in Mathematics Education, awarded with merit. My teaching approach is tailored to meet individual needs, starting with an in-depth initial interview to understand strengths and weaknesses and creating an action plan to address them. I have extensive experience and positive feedback from students and parents alike, with many students continuing with me from GCSE to A Level studies. My dedication to teaching is evident from the positive reviews I have received, highlighting my ability to explain concepts clearly, maintain a good lesson pace, and create a welcoming and supportive learning environment.
