About Oscar
My name is Oscar Binning, I am a History and Politics student at the University of Edinburgh and a native of Leith. My family background is modest; my mum raised me on her own and successfully gave me a stimulating enough upbringing to get me interested in the world and the events that have shaped it. I attended two state primary schools in Leith, and then Trinity Academy, before securing a place at Edinburgh. My particular areas of interest are contemporary international relations, post-WW2 European politics and history, the history and culture of the Greco-Roman world, and practical philosophy and morality. Getting my ideas across is just about the most satisfying thing I know how to do, and my experiences within and without academia so far have made me very good at it.

My teaching methodology is extremely straightforward. The most important thing I think a tutor can do is to be totally flexible to the needs of the pupil. Initially, I'll identify what material a prospective student needs help with the most, and then break that down into chunks which are both manageable and coherent; it is very important not to teach a lot of things at once which don't relate to each other.
After the material has been identified and divided up it is not just a matter of actually getting the student to remember it, but to understand it. Every student I have worked with who had any real trouble with these subjects had the same problem: they couldn't relate to it. Some teachers use so much academic jargon that I struggle to follow it and this has the added effect of making students waste time in exams using unnecessarily complex language that doesn't really cut to the heart of the material. I aim to scrap all of that and teach my students what they need to know in the most straightforward, utilitarian way possible. If you need to know how to answer a question, I will give you the tools you need and the context to know how to use them, rather than reading from a sheet written by an out-of-touch SQA employee who hasn't spoken to a secondary school student in years.
For example, if I was teaching a course on the First World War the lessons would be divided into 'themes' like, say, 'why the war began', in which I would go over the relevant information and explain how it all ties together, before reaching a conclusion and showing how what the student has just learned can be expressed in an essay or exam. This process would be repeated until the student has a working knowledge of every 'theme' required to achieve whichever grade they are aiming for. In practice, my tutoring style will vary from pupil to pupil as I get a feel for their needs, but this is the essential structure I will use.
