About Kate

I've been teaching privately for the past 10 years and have recently moved from London to Dorset and really look forward to getting to know the talent of the West Country music scene better too! I received my BMus(Hons) in Jazz Performance from Trinity College of Music in London and now split my time between teaching, performing, and recording. I have suffered with stage fright and performance anxiety my entire career and have had my fair share of vocal health issues to contend with along the way as well. I know how deeply personal our voices are and how when they're working well, they can fill your life with unparalleled levels of joy and well-being but equally, how much of an impact it can have on your overall sense of self-confidence and worth when they are not. Finding ways to work with and around these issues has helped me to become both a better and more sensitive performer and equally, a better, more sensitive teacher too. I am deeply passionate about sharing the techniques, tips and tricks I've learnt with my students and helping them to get the very best from their own voices too. I have helped past and present students to get into music colleges, start and develop their own bands/musical projects, perform better in their choirs and other ensembles, grow confidence in their own skills and value, expand their repertoire and have a lot of fun and fulfilling one to one interaction in the process! Here’s a little bit more context about me: My performing work with the internationally renowned vocal harmony trio The Puppini Sisters has seen me signed to Universal Records and our work together has taken us all over the world. From performances on The Royal Variety Show to recording on a number of occasions with the brilliant Michael Bublé. I have also been fortunate enough to work with other legendary artists and producers such as Gary Barlow, Seal, Bing Crosby, Cyndi Lauper, John Barrowman, David Foster and Bob Rock, to name a few. I've appeared regularly on other TV shows too, such as Strictly Come Dancing, Loose Women, The Graham Norton Show, This Morning, GMTV, The View (USA), and have been gigging, recording and touring internationally for the past 18 years. I also write and arrange music for the band and other projects too. Aside from The Puppini Sisters, I regularly perform in a solo capacity at most of London jazz venue stalwarts, such as Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex, The 606 Club. I am also the voice of a fantastic Ellington inspired mini big-band King Candy and The Sugar Push. I've recently started running one-off and residential workshops exploring the use of song format as a tool for greater connectivity between performers and their audience. I have also guest tutored at various music establishments up and down the country and have been a guest tutor at LCCM (The London College of Contemporary Music), Trinity College of Music, Garrick's Jazz Academy, doing both one-to-one lessons as well as running singing, theory and stylistic workshops too.

What to expect from your first lesson: It's important to foster a safe space for you to expand your range and repertoire within and unlock the highlights of your own unique and special voice. We can have a chat to begin and get you feeling relaxed and comfortable. I like to email a short questionnaire to each new student in advance of the first lesson, which helps me to get to know you and the music you want to sing better. Lesson breakdown: * Growing an awareness of the technical building blocks of the voice and how to harness these to full effect in your development and practice. * Warm ups and muscle strengthening exercises to suit your voice, goals and schedule. * Learning how to efficiently practise songs and expand your range and repertoire in the process. * Exploration of different sounds, textures, resonances and techniques to build support and relieve tongue root and jaw tension. * Tactics to deal with performance anxiety and how to foster a positive, mental attitude towards your beautiful voice. * Strategies to help you smooth over any noticeable breaks/passagios that may cause insecurity when singing. * Finding you some songs that you just LOVE to sing! I like to work with my students in setting regular short and medium term goals that fit in around you and help you to achieve your full vocal potential. I love that I get to teach people from all over the world and from all sorts of musical backgrounds; from beginners, keen enthusiasts and local choir members to conservatoire/university applicants, professionals and career changers (to music that is!).
