Find out more about Dominika

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I've been a lifelong bookworm, the kind of kid who sneaked a torch into bed just to finish "one more chapter." My passion for language grew as I dove into poetry recitals, drama performances, and, of course, plenty of writing competitions. Studying English literature and linguistics, right through to my postgraduate studies at King's College London, only deepened my love for language learning and literature.

I started private tutoring while at university, and I quickly developed a passion for it. There's something magical about working one-to-one or in small groups-it's personal, flexible, and incredibly rewarding to see learners flourish.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach a broad range of subjects, including English as a second language, IELTS preparation, and GCSE English and Literature. Each subject comes with its own focus, but one area I particularly enjoy is my conversational lessons with language learners. These lessons give us the freedom to explore a wide array of topics, and I love engaging in open discussions. As a storyteller, I often use stories as a foundation for my lessons, making learning not only educational but also creative and enjoyable. My natural curiosity means I'm open to discussing almost anything, always taking into account the interests of my students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

One of my most inspiring teachers was my drama teacher. She was incredibly kind and always encouraged us to look beyond the surface of the material we were working with. Whether we were analysing poetry, stories, or books, she inspired us to uncover deeper layers of meaning, exploring intertextuality and connecting the work to broader contexts-sometimes even linking it to the universe itself. Her approach opened my eyes to the richness of literature and storytelling, which continues to influence how I teach today.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

For me, being a good tutor goes beyond just knowing your subject inside out - it comes down to communication and adaptability. A skilled tutor needs to tailor their teaching to the learner's individual needs, breaking down complex ideas in ways that resonate. Flexibility is key; each student learns differently, so a personal approach is essential.

I've also found that adding a bit of humor can really break the ice and create a more relaxed learning environment. It helps students feel comfortable, encourages engagement, and makes lessons enjoyable.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During secondary school, I was part of a book club where we were encouraged to express our opinions about the novels we read. At one meeting, we were discussing a book that I absolutely adored, but almost everyone else had a completely different view. Instead of getting discouraged, I used this as an opportunity to develop my argument and present my perspective persuasively. I learned that disagreements, especially in literature, are not about "winning" but about understanding different viewpoints. This experience shaped my approach to tutoring-I always encourage my students to share their thoughts openly, even if they differ from the mainstream. I believe it's about developing confidence in one's own voice.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject

One of the biggest challenges I've encountered is the misconception that learning English or studying literature can't be fun. Many people believe that mastering a language must always be stressful, or that there's a lot of pressure to "perform" in a certain way, at a certain time. In reality, language learning can be an enjoyable and creative process if approached with curiosity and a relaxed mindset. I've worked to break this misconception by coaching the process, making it engaging and interactive, showing students that learning can be a rewarding experience without the unnecessary stress.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a deep thirst for knowledge that goes beyond just language learning. While I'm passionate about the intricacies of language, I'm equally fascinated by how language connects to broader fields-like culture, psychology, and even philosophy. This curiosity drives me to continually explore new ideas and perspectives, which not only enriches my own understanding but also enhances how I teach. My goal is to inspire my students to see language as a gateway to understanding the world in a more expansive way, encouraging them to think critically and creatively about what they learn.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Being a tutor means more than just teaching-it's about coaching the learning process. I guide my students, helping them build the skills they need not only to succeed academically but to become independent learners. I focus on developing their critical thinking, boosting their confidence, and fostering a love for the subject - and beyond. Every lesson is an opportunity for me to coach them through challenges, celebrate their progress, and encourage them to push their boundaries. That's what makes me a Superprof-I'm not just imparting knowledge, I'm empowering my students to unlock their full potential.
